We are seeking a Group Leader for the Manufacturing group in the Neutron Technologies Engineering (NTE) Section of the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD). The Neutron Technologies Division’s mission is to develop and deploy critical technologies for instruments and target systems, to support operations in those areas and to execute projects in support of neutron sciences. The mission of the Neutron Technologies Engineering Section is to develop, deploy and support neutron instrument and target systems with innovative engineering and technology. The Manufacturing Group Leader will lead the group of manufacturing experts as well as work closely with and bring together other internal and external resources to support the manufacturing needs of the NTE section and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) site.



The Manufacturing Group is responsible managing and overseeing the procurement, fabrication, budget, and timely delivery of critical components for the SNS such as the mercury target modules, inner reflector plugs, neutron instruments, and proton beam windows.  The Manufacturing group works closely with Quality Assurance, purchasing, and the engineering groups to ensure these complex components are delivered on time and within budget and are properly tested, certified and documented for use.  The group works closely with internal and external suppliers to solve manufacturing related issues and provide novel solutions to manufacturing and engineering problems.  The group also supports the SNS site by operating an small machine shop and supporting other manufacturing needs through the lab Facilities and Operations organization.  The group also provides engineering support for other NTE groups, including mechanical design and analysis, when needed. 


The Group Leader will lead a creative team of engineers and technical staff that make up the Manufacturing Group and promote a collaborative team environment to solve unique problems on first-of-a-kind components and systems.  The Group Leader will also forecast and manage the group budget, including the budget for major procurements within NTE.  The Group Leader models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensures a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated—a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 



  • Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing projects to position the group and SNS for future success
  • Develop and implement plans to exploit new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance within the group and section
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals and provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner
  • Provide relevant input to assist the NTE Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis
  • Attract a quality, diverse pool of top candidates and hire staff members who are committed to world-class performance and aspire to be the best in their field
  • Lead by example by exercising the principles in ORNL’s “Research Code of Conduct” as a guide for proposing, performing, and communicating research
  • Coach and mentor staff regarding Battelle’s “Safe Conduct of Research” principles
  • Lead ESH&Q by example and ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies, standards, and procedures
  • Exemplify a commitment to “One ORNL” by modeling lab expectations for excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and by working cooperatively to leverage capabilities across the lab
  • Forecast and manage a budget for the group including major, long lead procurements for the instrument and target systems

Basic Qualifications:

  • A B.S. degree with a minimum of 8 years experience in Mechanical Engineering or similar technical field or an equal combination of education and experience
  • Qualified candidates should have demonstrated experience in leading engineering teams
  • Qualified candidates should have demonstrated experience in design, analysis and fabrication of complex mechanical structures
  • Qualified candidates should have demonstrated project management experience in procurement and fabrication of complex, one-of-a-kind components
  • Qualified candidates should have a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply engineering codes and standards such as ASME BPVC and ASME Y14.5


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience, or an M.S. with a minimum of 7 years experience in Mechanical Engineering or other similar, technical field
  • Familiarity with SNS and similar facilities target and instrument systems
  • Familiarity with both conventional and unique manufacturing processes
