Group Leader, Nuclear Operations

We are seeking a Group Leader for the Nuclear Operations Section within the Non-reactor Nuclear Facilities Division in the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate which conduct operations within a hot cell facility of the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to ensure safe and compliant execution of the R&D mission.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Ensuring safe, compliant operations of building 7930, a category II nuclear facility located in the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center Complex (REDC)
  • Provide operational support to R&D for execution of mission deliverables in the production and research of radioisotopes.
  • Implementation of operating procedures, abnormal operating procedures, and alarm response procedures
  • Scheduling of work activities and authorization of work
  • Implement facility radioactive material inventory controls.
  • Responsible for emergency response and occurrence reporting
  • Coordinate, monitor, and supervise activities provided by support personnel in the facility including surveillance testing of fire detection and protection systems, security systems and radiation detection and alarm systems
  • Obtain and maintain additional qualifications as 7930 Operations Supervisor, NNFD Project Lead and NNFD REDC Complex Facility Manager

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a B.S. with 8 years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires a minimum of 8 years of nuclear operations experience
  • Qualified candidates should have demonstrated experience in leading technical teams


Preferred Qualification:

  • Degree in engineering field or related science.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.  


Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
