Purpose: The Fusion and Materials for Nuclear Systems Division (FMNSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking candidates for the Plasma Science and Technology Group (PSTG) Leader role to provide leadership and oversight for world-class research. The person in this position has the responsibility to provide long-term and day-to-day project and staff management and ensure the group’s technical, budget and professional development needs are met in a timely and professional manner. The successful candidate will engage multiple research programs performing world-class research on plasma generation and heating for a variety of applications including fusion energy and isotope production. The successful candidate will also play a key role in expanding research projects with private industry, which are a key part of the research portfolio at ORNL.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

This position reports to the FMNS Division Director. Responsibilities include the following:

•     Develop and/or contribute to research programs in the broad area of plasma science and technology

•     Communicate scientifically impactful results through publications and presentations

•     Manage a team of 10-15 staff with broad backgrounds including senior researchers, lab technicians, and administrative staff

•     Interface with programmatic sponsors to develop and foster relations and ensure timely and professional completion of programmatic milestones

•     Interface with other groups, divisions, and programs to foster collaborations

•     Support and foster professional development of group staff

•     Support recruitment and hiring functions to help expand group capabilities

•     Oversee and ensure that lab, directorate, and division safety and quality standards are being met

 

Qualifications required:

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in plasma physics, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related field with a minimum of five years of experience in plasma generation and heating
  • Qualified candidates should have at least three years’ experience managing people and/or directing teams
  • A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations and report writing
  • A demonstrated ability to work on multiple tasks and to independently set priorities to meet deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences and the US ITER project
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving research scope and programmatic needs
  • A highly motivated approach while maintaining safety consciousness
