<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Overview: 

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">We are seeking a <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">senior computer scientist to lead a world class research group in the area of Programming Systems for the ORNL and DOE mission.  Responsibilities include group leadership, research and group management. 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The Programming Systems Group <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">explores programming models, languages, compilers, runtime systems, task-based programming systems, and software development tools that impact fundamental changes in computing technologies and systems.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The position will be in the Advanced Computing Systems Section within the <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">.  CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Purpose:

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">You will have the opportunity to provide Research and Development (R&D) leadership to a group that strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNL’s aspiration to be the world’s premier R&D institution and ORNL’s science culture.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">In this role, you will bring together a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global scientific leadership in their field, nurture ORNL’s culture among group members, and continue to build and scale up individual excellence and impact in R&D.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">This role reports to and works closely with the Section Head for Advanced Computing Systems Research to implement the group’s scientific vision; develop group members to enable their career advancement; establish capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology; perform R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one’s respective specialty; set, implement, and model standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensure a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated—a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Major Duties/Responsibilities:

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">We are seeking a recognized leader in their area of technical expertise that will initiate, lead and perform independent R&D on an ongoing basis.  

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Responsibilities for this position include working closely with the project team to create, evaluate, and publish novel research ideas, supervise and mentor students, and collaborate with our partners and sponsors. Research activities include, but are not limited to:

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Rapid prototyping and evaluation of experimental systems, including hardware, software, tools, and applications, and being proficient developing complex software systems, like an operating system, compiler, adaptive runtime system, or scalable performance tool.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Studying the performance, resiliency, power, and productivity of contemporary and future high-performance computer systems under various workload characteristics through measurement, modeling, and simulation.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Publishing papers in high-quality refereed conferences and journals, such as SC, ICS, ISC, PPOPP, IPDPS, MICRO, HPDC, and IEEE TPDS.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Actively collaborating with industry, academia, government labs, and applications developers in a variety of venues.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Contributing to research proposals and reporting to major funding agencies.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Additional Responsibilities include: 

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Leadership

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects to position the group for future success.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Develop and implement plans to exploit new opportunities and/or expand existing efforts.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Provide relevant input to assist the R&D Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Attract a quality, diverse pool of top candidates and hire staff members who are committed to world-class R&D and aspire to be the best in their field.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Lead by example by exercising the principles in ORNL’s “Research Code of Conduct” as a guide for proposing<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">, performing, and communicating research.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Coach and mentor staff regarding Battelle’s “Safe Conduct of Research” principles
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Lead ESH&Q by example and ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies, standards, and procedures.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Exemplify a commitment to “One ORNL” <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">by modeling lab expectations for excellence in research, operations, and community engagement, and by working cooperatively to leverage capabilities across the lab.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Service

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Serve as immediate supervisor for staff members in group.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Encourage staff to “think and dream big,” take appropriate risks in their work, and develop skills that will enable them to pursue new ideas, scientific passions, and research programs.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Advance the reputation of the group members and standing of the group as a whole through establishing collaborations, Professional Society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Support group members by consistently reviewing technical products such as proposals, publications, and artifacts to ensure high quality and consistency with ORNL standards.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Build strong teams across ORNL.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Connect staff to your scientific network and professional societies.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Hold regular scientific/technical group meetings and be visible in the labs and workplace.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Assume front-line responsibility for safety in the group’s laboratory; mentor and empower the Laboratory Space Managers to create a strong safety culture.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Effectively communicate the importance of protecting proprietary or sensitive information and complying with ORNL cybersecurity policies and guidelines.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Basic Qualifications Required:

 

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Requires a Ph.D. in computer science, computational science or a related discipline. <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">and at least six years of relevant research experience, beyond the PhD.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">A well established track record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of expertise of the group.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Demonstrated experience in leading R&D teams.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Previous experience in ONE or more of the following areas:

 

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">knowledge of emerging architectures including heterogeneous computing, memory systems;
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">node-level programming environments such as C/C++ with experience in CUDA, SYCL, HIP, OpenCL, OpenACC/OpenMP compiler directives;
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">distributed system programming models like MPI, one-sided asynchronous programming models, or
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">compiler infrastructures like LLVM or GCC. 

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Preferred Qualifications:

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The ability to take initiative on research insights to bring them to fruition through publication or demonstration on mission applications.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary team.
