Overview:
We are seeking a Group Leader for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Instrument Support Group in the HFIR Beamline Operations Section (HBO) of the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) in the Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Neutron Sciences Directorate operates two neutron facilities on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy: The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). NSD’s mission is to develop world-class neutron scattering methods, approaches, and instrumentation; lead and support a vibrant user program; and perform cutting-edge scientific research that benefits from and contributes to these advances. NSD works with scientists from around the world and from a wide range of fields to solve critical research problems in fundamental and applied sciences.
The HFIR Instrument Support Group provides technical support for the operation of the HFIR beamlines, interface with personnel from the Research Reactor Division for regulatory compliance, and interfaces with crafts and other technical support groups for maintenance, repairs, and improvements.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide reliable and efficient maintenance of the scattering beamlines and facilities.
- Lead field implementation of instrument and support facility upgrades.
- Supervise a team of 3-4 technicians and engineers in the safe and compliant support of the HFIR neutron scattering program.
- Lead a team of matrix craft workers in support of the HFIR scattering program.
- Maintain up to date work packages, procedures, documents, and drawings in compliance with the HFIR Neutron Scattering Conduct of Operations.
- Support research and development groups in the safe and compliant operation of beamlines.
- Schedule and coordinate work activities of support technicians and craft workers.
- Serve as primary point of contact for HFIR scattering work authorization and task leading.
- Maintain detailed records for equipment reliability and troubleshooting/maintenance activities.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and optimization.
- Provide mentoring and career growth opportunities to group members.

Basic Qualifications:
- A MS degree in a science or engineering related field with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience or a BS degree in a science or engineering related field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experiences.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered (AS degree with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience or a HS diploma with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience).
- Demonstrated experience leading technical projects or teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a reactor facility.
- Specific experience in working with neutron scattering instrumentation.
Special Requirements:
This position requires successful completion of required training, including radiological training.
Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
