Overview: 
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a senior engineer and technical leader for our world class radioisotope production program, with expertise in the area of design, testing, and commissioning of equipment and infrastructure for nuclear materials handling. Supporting the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production, as well as extensive isotope production programs for the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and National Nuclear Safety Administration, this position will grant you the opportunity to work with rare nuclear materials, and the unique facilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), as you guide the strategic growth of our radioisotope handling infrastructure.

 

This position as the leader of the Radioisotope Infrastructure Development (RID) Group resides within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD) of the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED). The highly accomplished staff within the RSTD produce a variety of important medical, scientific, and industrial radioisotopes. These include several alpha/beta emitting radioisotopes either deployed or under clinical trial for treatment of cancer (e.g., Ac-225, Ac-227,Ra-224/Pb-212, and W-188); heavy actinides Bk-249, Es-254, and Fm-257 for fundamental chemistry research and new element discovery; Cf-252 for neutron emitting applications; Pu-238 for space exploration; and Ni-63 and Pm-147 for industrial applications. Work in the RSTD often takes place within remote handling facilities such as glove boxes and hot cells.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a design and engineering portfolio with the aim to enable more effective handling and processing of nuclear materials.
  • Provide leadership and technical vision for continuous improvement in nuclear material handling and processing.
  • Provide mentoring and career guidance to a staff of approximately 10 engineers and technicians to facilitate knowledge transfer and strategic development
  • Develop on-the-job training programs to support the develop of RID staff
  • Provide imaginative, thorough engineering solutions to streamline materials handling and increase the efficiency of target production
  • Implement continuous improvement and ensure work is completed to the safety, security, and quality
  • Serve in professional societies and standards development committees

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, or similar field, and a minimum of eight years of related experience is required
  • Demonstrated hands on experience in the handling of nuclear materials
  • Experience operation of complex electro-mechanical systems within process environments
  • Strong leadership and communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an R&D or production, testing and schedule-driven environments
  • Manufacturing or fabrication environment quality experience, i.e., NQA-1
  • Experience in maintaining high levels of process documentation and quality control and assurance
  • Line management experience with direct supervisory responsibility for a team



Special Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
