Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a HFIR Instrument Support Technician responsible for maintaining the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) Beamline Operations instruments, equipment, and facilities to ensure safe, reliable, predictable, and efficient operations. This scope includes the HFIR maintenance program and processes; implementation of corrective, predictive, preventative work activities; and scheduling and outage management.
This position reports to the HFIR Instrument Support Group Leader. You will work closely with members of the HFIR Beamline Operations Section, Science Staff and Instrument Engineers. You will coordinate and schedule HFIR craft resources for instrument maintenance activities. In this role, it’s important to possess a strong commitment to team environment dynamics with the desire to contribute expertise and follow leadership directives at appropriate times as well as work independently.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop written work package directions to perform and document maintenance work for repetitive, corrective maintenance, and modification activities, on both nuclear safety related and non-nuclear equipment in an operating reactor facility.
- Identify risks to either personnel or instrumentation and work with NSD/RRD/NTD and other personnel to plan appropriate risk mitigation, including those concerning health physics, industrial hygiene, and safety.
- Understand and implement human performance principles in the planning of maintenance work packages.
- Assure that UT-Battelle policies concerning environmental protection, safety, ALARA, and quality assurance are considered and followed.
- Determine the required specifications for materials, and request/coordinate the procurement of required material.
- Provides field work technical direction to craft supervisors and craft. Coordinates with equipment and facility management to accomplish work safely and with efficient use of resources.

Basic Qualifications:
- An associate's degree in engineering, maintenance or related field with 5 years of related experience. An equivalent number of years of experience and education will also be considered.
- Experience in a maintenance or technical field and the ability to diagnose equipment problems and develop work instruction.
- Experience with standard tools, test equipment, and instruments; and material and equipment performance tracking
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with minimal direction from managers and/or engineers.
- Proficient in computer word processing applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Good written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians.
- Proven experience with the supervision of personnel in a maintenance environment.
- Experience at a neutron user facility, research reactor or other large-scale experimental physics project or user facility is preferred.
- A strong commitment to compliance process and procedures and to safety and conduct of operations.
