Overview:  

We are seeking a Nuclear Safety Team Lead who will focus on leading, training, and directing the staff assigned for High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) nuclear safety support.  This position resides in the Nuclear Facilities Safety Division, within the Environment Safety Health & Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and supervise nuclear safety engineers at HFIR reactor facility.

  • Preparation and maintenance of the HFIR Safety Analysis Report (SAR), HFIR Technical Safety Requirements (TSR), and the HFIR Cold Neutron Source Documented Safety Analysis (CS DSA).

  • Preparation and maintenance of HFIR safety documentation, such as HFIR Hazards Analysis, HFIR Beyond Design Basis Event Enhanced Evaluation, HFIR Unreviewed Safety Question Determinations (USQDs).

  • Ensure HFIR technical compliance with the Nuclear Safety Rule, 10 CFR 830, subpart B.

  • Coordinate with the HFIR Safety Basis Authority, the Experiments and R&D Programs Leads, and others within the Research Reactors Division (RRD).

  • Ensure the application of the HFIR USQ process within the requirements of ORNL SBMS and RRD/NFSD procedures.

  • Act as the designate of the RRD Nuclear Facility Manager (NFM), as necessary, for the approval of HFIR USQDs/USQDSWs.

  • Develop and maintain capabilities with the HFIR safety analysis group for safety analysis modeling codes (e.g. ATHENA, BLASTFX, MCNP, MELCOR, MACCS2, ORIGEN, RELAP5), staying current with developments in research reactor safety analysis efforts.

  • Provide technical analyses services, as needed.

  • Ensure adherence to the rules and regulations that govern the operation of a DOE nuclear facility.

  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

  • Communicate regularly with U.S. Department of Energy regulators and other stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related engineering discipline with 10 years of experience, or

  • A master’s degree in an applicable engineering field with 8 years of experience, or

  • A PhD in an applicable engineering field with 5 years of experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing, leading, and motivating professionals.

  • Familiarity with more than one of the listed modeling codes.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Letters of Recommendation: 2 references are required to be submitted with resume.

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
