<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure for technical and scientific professionals to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broadrange of disciplines. As an important part of the broader High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, the division also hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), a Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility.


<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The Team


<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The <span style="border:none windowtext 1.0pt; font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">User Assistance<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif"> – Pre-Production Systems Group is within the Operations Section of the NCCS and ensures the functionality, performance, and usability of new NCCS systems through activities such as test development, acceptance, software installation, documentation, and early user support for all NCCS pre-production systems.


<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Major Duties/Responsibilities


<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The role comprises the following primary functions:

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Take technical ownership of user reported problems and provide hands-on support for scientific applications and libraries and users of high performance computing systems and clusters.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Compile and debug large science and engineering applications.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Identify and resolve system-level bugs in conjunction with other technical staff.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Work with vendors to resolve issues and implement changes as necessary.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Install third-party software applications and tools and provide documentation for usage.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Develop and execute system tests to ensure newly deployed systems can support user workloads. 
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Proactively ensure that users have up-to-date information about the system, including any changes and their impact on the users. HPC User Support staff are very involved in researching and developing documentation  and reference material during system early-use and upgrade phases, as well as maintaining them throughout system operation.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Participate in the development, maintenance, and delivery of training and outreach materials to users.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Respond to general administrative questions (e.g., system status, requests for accessor special accommodation, etc)
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Implement special projects as requested (e.g., metrics, cyber security, policy discussions). 


<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Basic Qualifications


  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and 3+ years of relevant experience
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">A minimum of 1 year of experience providing user support
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Requires practical experience with multiple programming languages and technologies including several of the following:
      • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Fortran
      • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">C
      • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">C++
      • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Perl
      • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Python
      • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Shell scripting (e.g., bash, ksh, etc.) in a Linux or Unix environment 


<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Preferred Qualifications


  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience building and installing scientific software and other 3rd party software applications on HPC systems
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience with HPC schedulers and resource managers
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience executing scientific software on HPC systems
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience writing user documentation
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience developing and delivering training for users
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Strong technical and analytical skills
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Maintains the highest level of professionalism at all times when interacting with internal and external customers
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Demonstrates a high-energy, positive attitude and commitment to quality customer service
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Contributes to a positive team environment within the center by demonstrating a strong work ethic, effectively communicating with others, and proactively anticipating center and user needs
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience coordinating and running support teams
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Understanding of the requirements of a DOE, DoD, and/or NSF HPC center
