Overview: 

 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest, multi-program, science and energy research lab in the U.S. ORNL delivers scientific discoveries and technical breakthroughs needed to realize solutions in energy and national security that provide economic benefit to the nation. ORNL’s National Center for Computational Sciences Division (NCCS) hosts Summit, the nation’s fastest supercomputer, and will soon be the home of Frontier, the nation’s first exascale supercomputer.  

 

The Technology Integration Group (TechInt) as part of the Advanced Technologies Section (ATS) in the NCCS is looking for HPC File and Storage System Scientists to help solve large-scale parallel I/O problems including distributed storage systems, parallel I/O, metadata indexing, I/O acceleration for persistent and on-demand POSIX file systems and non-POSIX storage systems for scientific HPC datacenters and edge ecosystems.

Our Organization:

 

This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division.  The Advanced Technologies Section offers scientific, technical, operational, and thought leadership by developing, hardening, and deploying solutions for compute and data intensive computing environments.  The NCCS provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure, coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals, to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities. NCCS is currently deploying the U.S.’s first Exascale system.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

 

  • Analyze log and telemetry data to better understand application I/O usage patterns and to help design next-generation file and storage systems for NCCS programs 
  • Perform scaling and performance benchmarking of applications against existing and new high-performance storage systems 
  • Investigate, design, and develop large-scale metadata indexing systems for NCCS programs 
  • Research and develop on-demand, light-weight file and storage systems for emerging scientific-edge ecosystems                                                          
  • Research and develop new capabilities to further NCCS’ leading file and storage systems 
  • Collaborate in authoring peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports and proposals  
  • Present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at national and international technical society meetings.
  • Perform service including mentoring, participating in conference committees, and maintain membership and leadership in HPC/storage professional organizations 

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • M.S. in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, or a related field and 7+ years of experience or equivalent or B.S. in one of these fields and 8+ years of experience. 
  • Familiarity with HPC parallel file and storage systems and the desire to work and become an expert within this field 
  • General Linux user skills (shell scripting, common editors and command line tools, etc.). 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, or a related field and 2+ years of experience or equivalent.                                             
  • Demonstrated research and development experience and ability to apply cutting edge technologies to system prototypes and ultimately to a stable operational system 
  • Experience in Lustre, IBM Spectrum scale, or DAOS 
  • Experience with light-weight and on-demand storage systems  
  • Experience with data processors, accelerators, heterogeneous nodes, and system architectures 
  • Experience with hierarchical storage architectures and/or storage class memories 
  • Experience with high-performance interconnects
  • Understanding of modern software development practices
  • Understanding of hardware/software interactions
  • Proven ability to analyze, propose, develop, and deploy solutions to existing problems 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation
  • Ability to work effectively as a team-member and collaborate with scientists, engineers, and sponsors 
  • Experience mentoring students, postdocs and early career staff.

 

Special Requirement:

 

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
