<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), which hosts several of the world’s most powerful computer systems, is seeking highly qualified individuals to play a key role in improving the security, performance, and reliability of the NCCS computing environments.  This includes supporting the fastest supercomputer in the world, Summit along with numerous commodity clusters and specialized programs.  Summit is<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif"> one of the scientific research community's most powerful computational tools for exploring solutions to some of today's most challenging problems.  

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">In this role, you will work within the HPC Clusters Group inside of the NCCS Systems Section to support numerous activities of the center.

 

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The HPC Clusters Group <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">administers and supports the division’s HPC computing infrastructure, which includes system installation, deployment, acceptance, performance testing, upgrades, problem diagnosis, and troubleshooting.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The Systems Section within National Center for Computational Sciences Division (NCCS).<span style="border:none windowtext 1.0pt; font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The HPC Systems Section <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">administers and supports the division’s computing, networking, and storage systems.

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The NCCS <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure, coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals, to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Major Duties/Responsibilities

 

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Work with the team to define and implement best practices and standards within the organization
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Automate systems administration tasks utilizing open source configuration management tools
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Assist with designing, building and maintaining HPC Linux systems
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Tune operating systems and applications to increase performance and reliability of services
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Diagnose system operational problems quickly and effectively
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Document system administration procedures for routine and complex tasks
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Participate in an oncall rotation providing 24-hour, 7-day support and off-hours maintenance windows
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Coordinate with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems

 

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Basic Qualifications

 

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or closely related field and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in Linux/UNIX Systems Administration.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

 

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Preferred Qualifications

 

  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Excellent interpersonal/communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Strong working knowledge of Unix system fundamentals and common network protocols.  Knowledge or experience working with Infiniband and parallel filesystems (Lustre, GPFS) is a plus.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience managing Linux/UNIX operating systems in a heterogeneous environment.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Solid understanding of networked computing environment concepts
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Ability to develop and maintain programs and scripts that aid in the operation and automation of administrative tasks using various shell and scripting languages
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Ability to identify requirements and to define, plan, and implement requisite solutions
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Ability to plan organize, prioritize tasks, and complete assigned projects with minimal supervision
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment software methodologies and how they apply to systems engineering
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">An understanding of site reliability engineering fundamental
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Familia<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">rity with code review processes / best practices and familiarity with tools like Git, GitHub and GitLab
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience using tools such as Grafana and Nagios to monitor systems, metrics, and create dashboards
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience designing and implement highly-available systems/services
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience participating in an open source community with patches accepted upstream
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience with developing systems tools, preferably using Python, Golang, Ruby, or Bash
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience deploying and maintaining automated configuration management software such as Puppet
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience building custom packages for RHEL/CentOS using RPM
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Familiarity or direct experience with various container strategies and orchestration tools such as Docker, Openshift/Kubernetes
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Familiarity or direct experience installing and utilizing job management and bechmarking tools such as Slurm, STREAM/OSU, MPIbenchmarks, IOR, etc.
  • <span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Experience implementing systems level security technologies like SELinux and following security best-practices
