Overview: 

The Scalable Algorithms and Coupled Physics Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division is seeking an application engineer with expertise in high performance computing and data science, especially as applied to modeling advanced manufacturing processes. In this role, you will be responsible for new algorithms to enhance the performance of scientific computing codes for the world’s largest supercomputers. Applications of interest will focus on physics-based simulations of advanced manufacturing processes (such as additive manufacturing), and utilization of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques using scientific data.

 

You will be expected to contribute to research and development projects to increase the performance of scientific computational models and work closely with researchers to apply these capabilities to solve scientific problems relevant to the US Department of Energy. You will be expected to interact with a diverse group of researchers across ORNL to solve challenging, interdisciplinary problems, and to effectively communicate with outside entities, including university and industrial partners. Interaction between computational modeling and applied research at ORNL user facilities will be expected.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Work within a committed team of scientists to develop and advance scientific computational tools for supercomputers.
  • Research, develop and implement algorithms for improved computational efficiency and scalability.
  • Apply advanced computing capabilities to solve scientific challenges within ORNL.
  • Interact with industrial partners, other research organizations, and universities related to advanced manufacturing technologies, and product, systems, and materials development.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering or a related field, and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering or a related field, and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with parallel computing techniques.
  • Experience with developing and training neural networks, with an emphasis on reinforcement learning and optimization problems.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing applications.
  • Familiarity with physics-based models (e.g., solid mechanics, heat and mass transfer) is preferred.
  • Fluent in python and C++.
  • Background in neural networks and machine learning
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by contributions to code projects and/or peer-reviewed publications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience.
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities and to meet deadlines.

 

Special Requirements: 

  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements and to sensitive projects. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
  • This position the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
