HVAC Design Engineer

Purpose:

The Design Engineering Group within the Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD) is seeking a Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Design Engineer with an emphasis in Department of Energy (DOE) Confinement Ventilation Systems (CVS).  The candidate will work with System Engineers, Facility Safety Engineers, Facility Managers, and customers to support nuclear facility and research operations within the Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED).

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Work with support organizations (e.g., facility managers, cognizant system engineers, ES&H, Fire Protection, Facility Safety) to design new or upgrade existing HVAC and CVS within nuclear facilities (Hazard Category II & III)
  • Establish project scope and support the System Engineer in the preparation of the System Requirements Documents (SRDs) for new projects
  • Obtain budgetary cost estimates from equipment suppliers to support project planning
  • Prepare and check Design Analysis & Calculations (DAC) for fan static pressure loss, equipment sizing, ductwork sizing, stack height evaluations, etc.
  • Develop equipment specifications and review / approve equipment submittals from sellers
  • Provide direction and guidance to in-house drafting and designers on the development of P&IDs, airflow drawings, control diagrams, sequence of operations, shop fabrication drawings, etc.
  • Prepare Drawing Change Notices (DCNs) to incorporate design and field changes
  • Prepare engineering studies for scoping future projects and develop estimates for management
  • Define design criteria for projects that will be designed by outside architect / engineering services
  • Provide oversight during the design, fabrication, and installation of HVAC systems and components and support the start up, testing, and balancing (TAB) activities
  • Respond to Request for Information (RFIs) that arise during construction

Qualifications/Skills Required:

  • BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering under an ABET accredited engineering curriculum (ABET accredited technology programs are not acceptable)
  • A minimum of 15 years work experience predominately within a DOE nuclear laboratory, DOE nuclear facility, or an equivalent environment
  • Extensive work experience in the design of Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and CVS pertaining to laboratory hoods, gloveboxes, hot cells, and enclosures for DOE nuclear facilities and operations or similar environments
  • Knowledgeable of national codes and standards applicable to the design of nuclear confinement ventilation systems such as ASME AG-1, ASME N-509, ASME N-510, and ASHRAE DG-1
  • Working knowledge of Industrial Ventilation design (e.g., ACGIH Industrial Ventilation Manual)
  • Knowledge and experience in start-up, testing, and balancing of HVAC systems and nuclear confinement ventilation exhaust systems
  • Experience in the preparation of control diagrams and sequence of operations for control of HVAC and nuclear confinement ventilation systems
  • Capable of developing and performing spreadsheet and hand calculations using recognized methods and techniques for the HVAC industry
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Tools (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat

Qualifications/Skills Desired:

  • Experience with Autodesk Design Software (AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, Inventor, Vault, etc.)
  • Hold a Professional Engineer license in the State of Tennessee
  • Experience in the design of HVAC and filtrations systems for clean rooms used in laboratory and research facilities
  • Understanding of national environmental compliance (e.g., NESHAP) issues relating to HVAC and Confinement Ventilation systems
  • Understanding of national standards in the area of testing and balancing (TAB) such as NEBB and AABC
  • Understanding of piping system requirements and interfaces relating to commercial / industrial HVAC systems
  • Member of a National HVAC Professional Engineering Organization (e.g., ASHRAE)
  • Knowledge and experience in national energy conservation (e.g., LEEDs, ASHARE 90.1) issues
