The SNS Site Services Section is responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the conventional facilities and utilities for the ORNL - Chestnut Ridge Campus.  The HVAC Engineer responsibilities include generating designs, reviewing architect-engineer drawings, specifications, and calculations, performing field inspection and commissioning support for new and renovated facilities on the Chestnut Ridge Campus and Melton Valley Campus to meet the Oak Ridge National Laboratory neutron sciences mission.   This requires a mechanical design engineer preferably with a strong HVAC and piping design experience.  In addition, the mechanical design engineer will need to become knowledgeable with the existing design parameters of the HVAC and direct digital control systems and conventional piping systems infrastructure across the campuses.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages all Site Services conventional facilities HVAC and piping drawings for configuration control. 
  • Reviews and provides input to maintain the master construction specifications for Mechanical Systems to support future Neutron Science construction tasks.
  • Serves as the focal point for all conventional mechanical design engineering services and maintains the Chestnut Ridge Underground Utilities Block Plans. 
  • Champion to produce and maintain As-Built documentation for conventional facilities mechanical systems.
  • Generates and issues design change notices to maintain configuration management control of mechanical systems across the Chestnut Ridge Campus and Melton Valley Campus.
  • Takes complex mechanical engineering designs from conception through installation, inspection, and commissioning.
  • Successfully interfaces with other discipline design engineers throughout the design, installation, start-up, commissioning, and As-Built process.
  • Creates HVAC and piping engineering drawings using computer-aided design (AutoCAD) graphics workstation.
  • Proficient in use of AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.
  • Reviews drawings to assure compliance with applicable engineering codes and drafting standards.
  • Generates design criteria for Architect-Engineer to create construction documents.
  • Generates detailed calculations and design analysis such as heating, cooling, and ventilating loads; make-up and exhaust air requirements; equipment sizing; ductwork sizing and static pressure losses; computer generated peak zone heating and cooling loads; computer generated zone and system hour-by-hour heating and cooling load analysis; utility consumption for a dynamic building energy consumption analysis; calculations and documentation of life cycle cost analysis.
  • Produces mechanical physical arrangement drawings.
  • Verifies and assures compliance with Work Smart Standards, International Building Codes and applicable ASHRAE and ASME standards.
  • Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering discipline
  • 5 or more years of experience in design of complex HVAC and piping systems
  • An equivalent combination of education and design experience may be considered instead of a BS degree 
  • Five years of recent experience using AutoCAD, Revit and Navisworks. Knowledge of the technical concepts of mechanical drafting plus basic mechanical engineering principles, codes, and standards is required


Preferred Qualifications:

  • State of Tennessee registered professional engineer preferred
