The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. Overview:

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at ORNL is carrying out the Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) project to double the proton beam power on target from 1.4 to 2.8 MW.  The beam energy will be increased by installing seven additional cryomodules containing 28 superconducting niobium cavities, and the beam current will be increased through upgrades to existing systems.

The HPRF Engineer will be responsible for supporting operations, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of the HPRF systems that are utilized for the acceleration and manipulation of charged-particle beams in the SNS accelerator. The HPRF Engineer will have a key role in the execution of the RF scope for the Proton Power Upgrade.

This position reports to the HPRF Team Leader and will interface with Electrical and RF Systems Group members, NScD staff, professional peers from non-ORNL institutions, ORNL business services, vendors and visitors.  You will have the opportunity to represent group activities and interests within ORNL and at professional conferences, workshops, and collaboration meetings.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and improve the design and operations of the HPRF systems to support the Research Accelerator Division’s mission to provide high availability (>90%) neutrons for Neutron Science investigations
  • Periodically test, maintain, and repair HPRF equipmen
  • Use the engineering design process to develop and design hardware improvements for the HPRF systems
  • Utilize programming languages such as LabView to develop test sets to gather operational data, troubleshoot, and improve the HPRF system performance
  • Utilize programming languages such as C++ to program microcontrollers
  • Provide HPRF support for accelerator operations including occasional call-in and off-normal work hours
  • Perform failure analysis on HPRF systems to propose reliability upgrades
  • Work closely with RF team members on system operations, maintenance, and improvements
  • Create and maintain documentation and procedures for HPRF equipment and ancillary systems
  • Work closely with the PPU project RF team in all aspects of project execution including scheduling, procurement, installation, and start-up
  • Interact with vendors throughout the procurement of PPU equipment, specifically representing the interests of ORNL and the project
  • Manage the PPU scope associated with the superconducting Linac RF and interact with the broader PPU project team to ensure project success
  • You will be expected to be willing to learn new skills and to train others
  • The SNS and HFIR facilities are in operation 24 hours per day and 7 days a week year round.  You may be occasionally required to support users and/or facilities during off hours or weekends.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 5 or more years of relevant technical experience
  • Highly motivated, self-directed and able to work in a team environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 7 or more years of relevant technical experience
  • Demonstrated hands-on laboratory experience, especially with RF and microwave test equipment
  • Expertise in computer programming using languages such as C++ and LabView
  • Experience with analog and RF simulation and modeling tools such as MATLAB, SPICE, and Microwave Office
  • Experience with large, multidiscipline engineering project execution
