Overview:
We are seeking a High-Temperature Materials Processing Researcher. This position resides in the Surface Engineering and Tribology Group in the Materials Structure and Processing Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will work with ORNL’s world-class experts and have access to the state-of-the-art facilities to learn, grow, and make major contributions to the exciting research activities here. You will be working with a research team led by a senior researcher to carry out the research and development of high-temperature ceramics and composites using advanced processes including but not limited to chemical vapor deposition/infiltration (CVD/CVI), polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP), and reactive melt infiltration. The current projects are focused on CVI/CVD and PIP of ceramic-ceramic and metal-ceramic composites. You are expected to be independently responsible to solve technical problems for technical projects and further grow this area through proposal writing and collaborations with industry and other divisions at ORNL including the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF).
In addition to meeting project milestones and producing high impact publications, involvement in professional societies and contributions to local communities are also highly encouraged.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support research projects on high-temperature materials processing.
- Work with sponsors and team members to achieve project goals and deliverables.
- Grow research portfolio through proposal writing and collaborations internally and externally.
- Present, report, and publish research results in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. or master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of two years of experience post Ph.D. or two to seven years of experience post master’s in high-temperature ceramic, alloy, and composite processing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and infiltration (CVI).
- Experience in polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) and reactive melt infiltration of ceramic composites.
- Experience in proposal writing.
- Strong interest and aptitude for experimental, hands-on laboratory work.
- Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and patents.
- Highly motivated and safety conscious.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
