Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. We are seeking an IT Operations Systems Administrator who will support the Systems Management Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) of the National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NND is a world-class leader in the development and deployment of technology for nuclear security. Partnering with subject matter experts and software developers, the Systems Management Group’s IT Operations staff architect and implement solutions for hosting and maintaining infrastructure in support of on-premise and cloud-hosted program management, mission-support, data collection, and material/asset tracking custom-developed software applications.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The qualified candidate will be responsible for the engineering and administration of a computing infrastructure supporting a broad range of NNSA-sponsored projects. Primary job responsibilities are:
- Administration of VMware and Azure MS Windows Servers (production, test, and development) with an emphasis on web applications and MS SQL Server
- Ensuring all database servers are backed up and tested in a way that meets the recovery point objectives (RPOs)
- Maintaining security through updates, patches, proper permissions, and firewall requests
- Monitoring systems and ensuring appropriate logging to identify potential problems
- Working with developers to troubleshoot issues and to deploy releases to production, test, and development environments
- Collaborating with team members, Product Owners/Managers, subject matter experts, and other internal and external resources to define and document infrastructure requirements
- Participating in periodic on-call rotation with the ability to respond to system events as well as perform maintenance functions outside of normal business hours
- Helping plan and perform migration of onsite database and application servers to Microsoft Azure
- Implementing new environments and services in the Azure cloud as related to SQL or other services
- Researching and implementing new technologies or approaches that improve database and application server operations
Basic Qualifications:
- B.S. in a technical major, such as software engineering or computer science and a minimum of five years of relevant experience. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Proven experience in provisioning and managing Microsoft infrastructure technologies including Windows Server, SQL Server, IIS, Active Directory, in addition to VMWare, Azure, and networking
- Expertise in SQL Server and associated technologies
- Experience with PowerShell
- A strong understanding of network communications and networks, subnets, VLANs, various networking protocols, and associated ports
- Ability to interpret and apply security practices working within an IT infrastructure spanning various networks with different security requirements
- Ability to prioritize tasks as required and meet requirements deadlines as directed by the IT Operations Technical Lead
- Ability to work well under pressure, maintain composure during stressful situations, and exercise good judgment when faced with complex decisions
- Ability to handle shifting and multiple priorities and demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills
- Ability to foster teamwork, working cooperatively and effectively with others to resolve problems
- Ability to proactively address infrastructure needs to maintain service availability for both internal and external customers
Preferred Qualifications:
- Microsoft Azure (IAAS, PAAS, SAAS, AAD) experience
- SQL Server Analysis Services, Reporting Services, Integration Services, and Power BI experience
- Experience managing Active Directory (AD) permissions
- Experience with Idera
- Experience handling sensitive data
- Experience with Linux operating systems
- Experience with RSA and/or HSPD-12 authentication
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced technical environment, setting priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapting to ever changing needs

Special Requirements
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
