Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad spectrum of science and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. We are currently seeking applicants to serve as an Immigration Specialist in the Diversity & International Office.

 

The incumbent will be the primary point of contact for an identified group of Science Directorates, HR business partners, and foreign national employees to provide direction and guidance on viable immigration avenues for employment. Educates, counsels, and communicates immigration service practices within ORNL to identified groups in order to facilitate compliance.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Promote an environment of teamwork and excellence in customer service that enable science at ORNL.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for a large group of employees, hiring managers, and HR staff 
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of immigration laws, regulations, practices, and trends.
  • Review and evaluate all pertinent information and documents related to foreign national employment candidates and employees to ensure compliance with DHS, DOL, DOS, and DOE laws/regulations.
  • Process employment based non-immigrant visa petitions and other documents primarily in the categories of H-1B, TN, E-3, J-1
  • Track visa dates and work with foreign national employees to review and maintain an employable visa status
  • Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer for UT-Battelle’s Exchange Visitor Program
  • Utilize online case management and reporting system for employment visas and a Department of State system for J-1 visas
  • Conduct internal audits of H-1B and J-1 clients and prepare various reports
  • Prepare and present various training sessions on a variety of immigration topics
  • Other work as assigned

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with five to seven years of relevant immigration experience or equivalent relevant combination.
  • Requires competence and a strong working knowledge of complex federal regulations and legislative issues regarding immigration law,.
  • Requires a minimum of five years recent hands-on experience preparing and filing H-1B visa petitions with the USCIS.
  • Requires excellent customer service skills, in addition to organization, time management, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Requires a demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and accurate, set proprieties appropriately and work on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Requires working capabilities in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Must be detail oriented and able to provide immigration support in complex situations
  • Incumbent must be a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check as required by the Department of State to become an Alternate Responsible Officer for ORNL’s J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior human resources work experience in a multicultural environment.
  • Experience filing immigration petitions in the STEM fields highly desirable
