Overview: 

The Information Technology Services Division in the Business Services Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants for an Infrastructure Services Engineer position in the Research and Development Systems Engineering group. The R&D Systems Engineering group exists to facilitate lab goals through systems engineering, integration, and support for the research community at ORNL. We run mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other services where science happens at the lab. The Infrastructure Services Engineer is responsible for facilitating R&D projects.   This position will work with a team to provide deployment, automation, monitoring, and management tool infrastructure for researchers.  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Support deployment, monitoring, and management for ORNL research projects.
  • Ensure the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems.
  • Scripting via PowerShell and other tools.
  • Evaluate architecture and offer recommendations for improvements.
  • Design, install, configure, automate, and maintain Server systems, Storage, Backup, and VMWare clusters in support of customer needs.
  • Assist with continuous process improvements efforts.
  • Evaluate new technology options and vendor products.
  • Collaborate with research teams to ensure new environments meet requirements.
  • Identify and document IT best practices that will improve the systems deployment function.
  • Contribute to technical presentations on complex technical concepts to small to medium groups of scientists and engineers.
  • Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.  
  • Troubleshoot system problems quickly and effectively. 
  • Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.  
  • Answer escalated helpline calls in addition to primary project work. 
  • Monitor systems performance.  
  • Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages. 
  • Maintain documentation/notes on software builds and installs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology or related technical subjects and five years' experience (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
  • Experience in automation of system administration tasks.
  • Experience with scripting and automating tasks and processes to improve overall efficiency.
  • Experience with backup architecture and operations.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language such as PowerShell, Python, or equivalent.
  • Experience managing a virtualized environment including tuning and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enterprise automated VM Cluster installation/configuration/management experience.
  • Knowledge of multiple current operating systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform job tasks while considering cyber security risk of those tasks, and consulting with security professionals when necessary.
  • Knowledge of scripting or programming languages such as Python or PowerShell. The ability to utilize source code repositories for storage and script revisions is also desired.
  • Knowledge of enterprise class server/storage hardware.
  • Experience in an environment requiring change control processes.
  • Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
  • Experience with Nagios, Check MK, Solarwinds, Ganglia, and other network and device monitoring systems. 
  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.  
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Technical documentation skills, including ability to prepare simple documentation web pages. 

 

Special Requirements:

  • HSPD-12 PIV badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
