Overview:  

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Instrument Design Engineer who will focus on designing, deploying, and improving instruments for the neutron science community at ORNL’s High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The successful design, deployment, and improvement of neutron instruments requires expertise in all traditional and some non-traditional engineering subject areas. You will contribute directly within your own subject area and collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and technical staff in various fields to create innovative solutions that enable groundbreaking research and drive scientific discovery! This position resides in the Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform engineering design, analysis, and validation testing on mechanical systems for SNS and HFIR instruments.
  • Coordinate fabrication, procurement, and installation of components and systems.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to designers, ensuring compliance with standards and customer expectations.
  • Collaborate with diverse team members to achieve project goals and lead multidisciplinary activities.
  • Develop concepts, detailed designs, and prototypes for new equipment deployments and improvements to existing equipment.
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for design reviews and management.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of approved equipment configurations.
  • Support testing, development, and R&D activities for continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and implement project plans for instrument improvements and/or new instrument design and construction.
  • Communicate technical status, performance, and cost estimates reliably to ORNL management.
  • Ensure instruments are safe to operate and meet ORNL, code, and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineering and technical staff.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, civil engineering, engineering science, or a related field and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in engineering design and analysis of mechanical and/or structural systems.
  • Experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Product Data Management (PDM).
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary technical teams.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems, and ability to technically analyze and communicate engineering problems and to propose potential solutions.
  • A master’s degree in related field.
  • Familiarity with Creo CAD and/or Windchill PDM software.
  • Experience working in nuclear, accelerator, or neutron science facilities.
  • Finite Element Analysis using ANSYS or similar software.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs.

 

Special Requirements:

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

 

Export control, no clearance:  This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
