Overview:
We are seeking an Instrument Technician who will focus on field calibrations and maintenance support. This position resides in the Measurement Services Group in the Fabrication Instrumentation & Inspection Division under Facilities and Operations Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our calibration and maintenance team, you will be responsible for instrumentation support on the Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR). You will handle fabrication, installation, calibration, and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems and provide assistance for end users as necessary.
The position is within the calibration and maintenance support side of the Instrumentation and Controls group. The calibration and maintenance group also supports the radiation, process, environmental, and research instrumentation at the laboratory.
The parent group, Measurement Services, is also responsible for operation, installation, maintenance, and calibration of a wide range of equipment, including areas of electronic, pneumatic, and microprocessor-based equipment used to measure and control variables such as flow, level, pressure, temperature, motion, force, radiation, and chemical composition. Additionally, they also perform NIST traceable high accuracy (Metrology) calibrations. Instrument Technicians also supports computer data centers, fiber and network infrastructure, personal computers, public address systems, access control, security systems, audio visual system, and radio systems.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Conduct preventative maintenance activities, perform operational checks/tests.

Perform calibrations to ensure that equipment is meeting operational performance criteria.

Install various types of instruments or control equipment.

Troubleshoot and repair various equipment types, interconnecting cabling including fiber.

May be required to design, fabricate, or modify equipment or components for customer special requests.

Interact with the customer to provide customer support and education.

Identify needs, determine sources of problems, or to provide information on equipment use

Provide support or recommendations for new or existing equipment regarding installation, upgrades, or enhancements.

Participate in pre-job briefings and work control processes, provide input into procedures.

Basic Qualifications:
-
A two-year degree in Electronics or related field or equivalent military or technical school training and a minimum of five years of relevant hands-on maintenance experience in the repair of electronics systems and industrial instrumentation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required for the position.

Will be required to maintain electrical worker qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience installing, maintaining, inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing electronic, pneumatic, and microprocessor-based equipment.

Ability to interpret, understand, and work with electrical and electronic schematics.

Ability to troubleshoot control systems and components.
-
Experience using electrical testing and measuring equipment.

Experience with programming control devices, PID, and control systems.

Experience in software development using LabView, PLC language, or other platforms.

Knowledge of the NEC code book or other related standards.

General knowledge of lock-out/tag-out and other relating safety procedures.

Good communication and reading skills, including comprehension of technical documents

Good mathematical, scientific, mechanical, and logical reasoning abilities

Ability to interact professionally in high stress situations

Detail oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills
-
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
Special Requirements:

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

Q or L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
