Overview: 

The Testing Science and Cascade Engineering Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking an Instrumentation Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) Designer for the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Engineering Group.

 

In this group, we are focused on the development of testbeds and enrichment systems by human machine interface research and system logic development and this position will have with an emphasis in the areas of instrumentation hardware and software to make a significant contribution to projects involving isotope enrichment, nuclear nonproliferation, and instrumentation of mission-critical systems.

 

We develop and implement advanced control system architectures for enrichment technology test beds.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • The candidate should be familiar with and capable of producing the following types of drawings or documents:
    • Enclosure fabrication drawings with PLC, DC power supply, circuit breaker, and terminal blocks
    • Electrical schematics, and instrumentation loop drawing diagrams.
    • Conduit routing, cable schedule, and cable termination drawings.
  • Reports to the Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Engineering Group Leader and works closely with research and technical staff to implement the group’s scientific vision to develop capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology.
  • Supports R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one’s respective specialty; follows and supports standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules.
  • Effectively interacts with various personnel and R&D staff, both within and outside of ORNL.
  • Works collaboratively with co-workers and management as well as independently, to fully document work performed in the forms of technical documentation and record keeping.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and systems without formal training as necessary to meet project goals.
  • Interfaces with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, and test campaign personnel.

 

The successful candidate will:

  • Read and interpret electrical and electronic circuit drawings, diagrams, and schematics
  • Document, support, test, and maintain process instrumentation (e.g. pressure, temperature, flow, valves, gas analyzers, variable frequency drives)
  • Evaluate designs and equipment for reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety
  • Work in accordance with ORNL, ESED, and EI&C Group procedures and programs including Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality (EHS&Q)
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while effectively supporting ORNL management, research staff, and other team members
  • Clearly communicate, both verbally and in writing, to sponsoring agencies, ORNL management, engineers and researchers, technicians, and craftsmen
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.

Basic Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in electronic technology or related discipline with a minimum of five years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with one or more of the following design programs: AutoCAD, Visio
  • Experience with design and deployment of measurement and instrumentation systems
  • Employee may be required to work near radiation, cryogenic and high voltage areas and work could involve climbing ladders and the use of fall protection; therefore, the candidate must be able to acquire and maintain appropriate training and qualifications to work in these areas, use safety equipment, and follow all safety instructions
  • Ability to hold and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel when required
  • Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical
  • Experience with equipment layout and packaging
  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • Experience reading piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).
  • Tracing and documenting existing wiring and instrumentation as-builts
  • Ability to assist with assembly of prototype and/or production devices
  • Hands-on experience working with electrical, instrumentation, and process systems,
  • Experience fabricating complex electrical and electronic equipment using neat, precise wiring and soldering, and accurately following schematic diagrams

 

Special Requirements: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug

testing program.
