Overview: 

We are recruiting an Ion Source Technician who will focus on refurbishing, installation, operation and maintenance of the H-  ion sources and Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) systems for the SNS accelerator Front End (FE), Beam Test Facility (BTF) and Ion Source Test Stand (ISTS). This position resides in the Front End Systems Group in the Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Front End Systems Group is responsible for delivering time structured H- beams required for the SNS accelerator and the Beam Test Facility, as well as for research and development efforts on H- beam production, transport, chopping, and diagnostics.
 

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

 

OPERATIONS SUPPORT

  • Supports or performs operations of the ion source and the LEBT system on the FE, the BTF and the ISTS.
  • Reconditions used ion sources and used LEBTs, maintains several ion sources and several spare LEBTs ready for installation.
  • Supports R&D activities on the ISTS and BTF.

MAINTENANCE SUPPORT

  • Supports or performs scheduled maintenance tasks on the ion source and/or LEBT on the FE, the BTF, and the ISTS.
  • Supports or performs emergency maintenance to restore proper operation of the FE ion source and/or LEBT after failures causing downtime (7/24 during run periods).
  • Maintains and restocks assigned spares and equipment.

TESTING SUPPORT

  • Supports or performs the preparation and the execution of ion source and/or LEBT tests on the FE, the BTF, or the ISTS.
  • Supports or performs the installation of new ion source and/or LEBT equipment to be tested on the FE, the BTF or the ISTS.
  • Supports or performs the trouble shooting of issues on the FE, the BTF and the ISTS.
  • Documents performed test and their results.

PAPERWORK AND COORDINATION SUPPORT

  • The Candidate is expected to become competent in the SNS Operations, Maintenance and Services Work Control Procedure.
  • Supports or performs writing work requests and work orders.
  • Supports or performs creating and maintaining work plans pertinent to ion source maintenance activities.
  • Supports or performs coordination and management of maintenance activities that take place in the SNS Front End Building interfacing with other work groups involved.

GENERAL SUPPORT

  • Leads or assists identifying root causes of failures, weaknesses, vulnerabilities and variations.
  • Leads or assists developing corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.
  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. 


Basic Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Engineering technology, or related field
  • 3 or more years of relevant technical experience
  • An equivalent combination of relevant training and experience may be considered instead of an AS degree
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and interpret technical requirements and specifications
  • Demonstrated experience with electromechanical applications
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an R&D laboratory or DOE research facility
  • Experience with high voltage supplies and components
  • Relevant experience with electrical and mechanical testing
  • Good interpersonal skills, and ability to work well in a team environment

 

Other Requirements: 
This position requires some physical activity, such as carrying items, occasionally climbing ladders, etc.

This position requires Rad Worker I training
 

Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
