Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking two Linux system admins to support the Neutron Science Directorate (NScD). The Linux system admins are responsible for the operation of computing infrastructure that is critical to data acquisition, data reduction, data analysis, data management and instrument control systems. You will work closely with other group members within ITSD, CCSD and interface with external scientific users, instrument scientists, and scientific associates at HFIR and SNS. You will report to the Neutron Systems Engineering and Support group leader within the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:


  • On site installation and support of computer hardware.
  • Responsibility for over 400 physical and virtual Linux hosts including 8 PB of storage.
  • Support of scientific applications in a Linux environment.
  • On-call rotation to which includes troubleshooting user issues and after-hours support.
  • Ensure system compliance with all DOE and ORNL policies and procedures.



Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field plus two years of experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • 3+ years' experience with RedHat Enterprise, CentOS or Ubuntu.
  • Experience managing physical and virtualized Linux hosts.
  • Experience with basic switch and router configuration.
  • Experience with block (SAN) and file (NFS and SMB) storage solutions.
  • Experience with process automation using scripting, configuration management and containerization.
  • Excellent communication skills possessing the ability to interface with non-technical and technical customers.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.  
  • Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience with on premises cloud native platforms (VMware, Openstack, Apache Cloudstack and others)
  • Demonstrated ability to perform job tasks while considering cyber security risk of those tasks, and consulting with security professionals when necessary.
  • Understanding of high-performance storage design.
  • Experience in an environment requiring change control processes.
  • Ability to work in a group and alone on various projects.

Special Requirement:


This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
