We invite applications for the position of a Machine Learning and Signals Analysis Researcher to support the ORNL, Radio Frequency (RF) Communications and Intelligent Systems Group in the Electrical and Electronics Systems Research Division (EESRD). This position will be a part of a cross-functional team that has responsibility for operational and research activities pertaining to national security and energy systems security. The primary duty of this position is performing R&D to develop novel machine learning and signal processing algorithms for analysis and identification of electrical and RF signals. This position will involve working with a team of other researchers and engineers to develop and demonstrate impactful technologies. This position requires a self-motivated individual with strong interpersonal abilities, and effective oral and written communication skills to disseminate work.


Major Duties/Responsibilities


The successful candidate will: 

  • Design and prototype machine learning and signal processing algorithms
  • Establish algorithm and system requirements
  • Select appropriate software and hardware to fill requirements
  • Participate on technical teams 
  • Participate in preparing white papers and proposals 
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to sponsors, technical peers, and at professional society meetings 
  • Prepare journal and conference manuscripts for publications
  • Prepare technical reports for sponsors, program managers, and technical peers
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance is required 



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline
  • Experience in developing and applying machine learning and signal processing algorithms
  • Understanding of database architectures (e.g., PostgreSQL, Influx DB), data analytics and metrics software (e.g., Apache Spark), and data visualization tools
  • Experience with widely used scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, LabView or C++
  • Excellent communication skills in a team environment 
  • Experience in publishing research in scientific journals and conferences
  • Experience in technical or scientific writing in order to prepare reports and presentations
  • A strong interest in organizing technical teams and developing new projects
