Purpose:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Facilities Management Division is seeking qualified applicants for a Machine Shop Skilled-Craft Supervisor.
This Supervisor will lead, manage, and direct activities performed by Machine Shop staff. The Supervisor will coordinate, plan, and schedule work with a strong focus on customer service and safety. Coordination, planning, and task preparation with customers and other support personnel are essential to ensure that work is conducted in a safe and efficient manner. The Supervisor will ensure that the service needs of research and support organizations are met by providing quality products and services, delivered in a timely manner, at good value to the customer. This position primarily supervises machining related work. The Machinist Supervisor works closely with their counterparts in Fabrication and is called on to supervise other craft work as needed.
Supervisory Duties/Responsibilities:
- Establish and maintain a business culture that focuses on meeting the needs of customers, ensuring they are fully informed about schedules, status, cost, delays, etc. in order to minimize operational impacts.
- Ensure that work tasks are properly analyzed and graded according to ORNL work control procedures.
- Develop cost estimates and schedules in a manner that is compliant with environmental, safety, health, security, and quality requirements.
- Ensure work is conducted safely, securely and in compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures.
- Participate in incident reporting, safety walk downs, audits, assessments and corrective action management where applicable.
- Responsible for the supervisory administrative functions of staff including training, timekeeping, skills development, discipline, performance evaluation and feedback, etc.
- Responsible for on-the-job training, reviewing work activity and evaluating performance and qualifications of craft workers.
- Accountable for staff performance and ensure their actions are compliant with ORNL policies and procedures.
- Maintain an open and supportive working environment where staff report issues and concerns without fear of retribution.
- Ensure completeness of records necessary to maintain configuration control, equipment history, continuous operations, and regulatory reporting.
- Abide by and actively promote the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning.

Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Journeyman machinist with nine or more years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Working knowledge of fabrication processes that include but are not limited to: welding and assembly, CNC machining and programming, dimensional inspection, conventional machining, machine trouble shooting, repair, and maintenance
- Must be familiar with and have a strong working knowledge of CAD & CAM software such as Master CAM, Auto CAD, Esprit, G Codes, Microsoft Office products, Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a company issued P-Card to initiate purchasing transactions
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from DOE. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an on-going random drug testing program
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in a lead or supervisory position is a plus
- Supervisory / Project Management experience and familiarity with labor relation principles
- Currently hold an active DOE “Q” clearance
- Exceptional blueprint reading, math and written communication skills for communicating across all levels of ORNL staff
- A team player who exercises good judgement, professional ethics, promotes a positive work environment interacting with a wide variety of staff across the ORNL campus
