Overview:
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Dimensional Inspection Machinist in the Surveillance & Inspection Services group. In this role you will, under limited supervision, operate a variety of machine tools to inspect, calibrate, or produce precision parts and instruments. You will be responsible for applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining, and inspection and calibration procedures.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Measure, examine or test completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments.
- Read and understand Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and technical drawings.
- Program, set-up and operate Coordinate Measurement Machines (CMM) and utilize a variety of inspection tools (hand tools, profilometers, optical comparators, etc.) to conduct precise GD&T, dimensional, and calibration services.
- Generate compliant reports documenting detailed results and dispositions of inspected components.
- Program, set-up and operate conventional, special-purpose and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining including lathes, mills, surface grinders, multi-axis CNC equipment and water jet cutting and wire fed electrical discharge machines (EDM) to machine parts to specifications.
- Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications or sample parts to calculate dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations and setup requirements.
- Fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by utilizing programming tools such as CAD/CAM and MDI systems.
- Enter commands to retrieve, input, edit and validate computerized machine control media
- Fit and assemble machined parts and weldments into complete units as well as troubleshoot fabrication issues.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
- Select and operate necessary cutting tools, hand measuring tools, power tools and horizontal and vertical band saws.
- Conduct housekeeping of shop and equipment.
- Other tasks as assigned by management.

Basic (or Required) Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent with 5 or more years of recent verifiable work experience as a machinist. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of dimensional inspection/calibration practices, procedures, and their applications.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience and familiarity with ASME Y14.5.
- Experience with dimensional and torque calibrations.
- Experience and familiarity with ISO 17025.
- Completion of a certified machinist apprenticeship.
- Knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, layout techniques and shop safety.
- General computer.
- Ability to work and coordinate effectively with others and maintain positive working.
- Ability to give full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made and ask questions as appropriate.
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- The ability to work effectively with others and maintain positive working.
Special Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
- Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
