Overview:
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer who will focus on the manufacture and delivery of critical components to support neutron science at ORNL. This position resides in the Manufacturing Group in the Neutron Technologies Engineering, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will initiate and oversee procurement and fabrication of key equipment supporting neutron sciences. You will work with on-site machine shops and interact with subcontracted vendors to supply and produce major neutron science-related components such as reflector plugs, moderators, beam windows, mercury target modules, and other complex fabrications. The primary role of the manufacturing engineer is to manage the production of neutron source components ensuring high quality and on-time deliveries as well as developing the special manufacturing processes to produce these unique items. In addition, the manufacturing engineer will perform engineering tasks within the Neutron Technologies Engineering Section including analysis, process development, quality oversight, and other engineering functions as needed.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Act as Technical Project Officer (TPO) to oversee all technical aspects of subcontracts.

Develop and maintain suppliers for neutron source related components.

Manage neutron source component schedules for on-time delivery.

Develop and qualify welding, machining, fabrication, and testing processes.

Oversee, document, and improve special processes used to manufacture neutron source components.

Coordinate manufacturing tasks with design engineers, quality specialists, and procurement staff.

Maintain all required documentation of neutron source manufacturing components.

Basic Qualifications:

A BS in mechanical engineering or a relevant engineering field with 3 or more years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Five or more years of experience working in an engineering or manufacturing environment.

Demonstrated ability to complete complex projects within cost and schedule skills.

Competent professional knowledge in one or more of the following: metallurgy, welding, machining, coatings, and non-destructive evaluation.

Knowledge and experience applying the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Experience working under DOE Order 414.1D (“Quality Assurance”), ISO 9001:2015 (“Quality Management Systems”), NQA-1, or equivalent quality assurance programs.
