Overview:  
We are seeking an R&D Associate who will focus on research and development of high-performance computational simulation code for materials joining and allied material manufacturing processes.  This position resides in the Materials Joining Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   

 

As part of our multi-disciplinary research team, you will focus on research and development for integrated computational welding engineering (ICWE) simulation tools and their applications to advance material joining science and technology with access to the vast research resources in a national laboratory environment. Developing and applying high performance computational (HPC) modeling tools to solve complicated thermal-mechanical-metallurgical interactions and their influence on the property and performance of real-world welded structures and additively manufacturing structures are expected to be an essential part of your research.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

  • Participate in delivering high-quality research results to government and industry sponsors in the area of materials joining and allied technologies, with an emphasis on the development of computational simulation of welding processes, and the properties and performance of welded structures, and additively manufactured components. 
  • Develop and apply ICWE modeling tools to support dissimilar material joining technology development 
  • Develop and apply HPC for materials joining and additively manufactured components.
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in welding engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline and a minimum of 2 years of experience after the Doctorate
  • Background in computational simulation experience in welding, materials joining, and/or allied manufacturing processes 
  • General knowledge and/or experience with welding metallurgy of ferrous and/or nonferrous alloys 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skill and experience with HPC simulation of welding residual stresses, and welding process simulations
  • Experience in the use of phase transformation modeling tools
  • Experience and skills in developing advanced experimental measurement systems to characterize weld residual stresses 
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory  
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
