Summary:  The Nuclear and Extreme Environment Measurements (NEEM) Group within the Fuel Development Section (FDS), Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks applications for an applied Technician, with emphasis in the area of cad modeling and technical drawings.


The primary function of this open position is to create the computer aided drafting designs required to enable harsh environment experiments.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will be involved in translating mechanical design specifications into cad modeling and technical drawings.  Specific tasks include developing accurate cad models based on given specifications, converting cad models into technical drawings for fabrication, accurate and concise callouts for fabrication specifications, coordinate the fabrication of experiment components, and tracking fabrication lead times and deliverable dates to ensure successful scheduling of experiments.  The selected candidate will be responsible for interacting with other Laboratory staff, both within and outside the NEEM group, to successfully complete projects.  The candidate is expected to be able to work efficiently on independent tasks and collaborative efforts.


The candidate will work with experienced irradiation engineers to identify mechanical design specifications and fabrication needs, use state of the art computer aided design (CAD) software to develop and refine the designs, work with NEEM staff to fabricate and assemble the experiments, develop and maintain appropriate experimental technical documentation.


Qualifications Required:

  • Candidates must have a technical AS degree in mechanical, engineering, or drafting and five years or more of experience using commercial CAD software (Creo)
  • The candidate must have experience using computer aided design software (specifically Creo), as well as an understanding of ANSI callouts, machining practices, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T). Experience working on projects in strict regulatory environments is also highly desirable
  • The candidate must be detail oriented and work well in a team environment
  • Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors
  • Flexible, work remotely with direct supervision




This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
