The Source Development and Engineering group of the SNS Neutron Technologies Engineering (NTE) Section of the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) is responsible for designing, developing, and supporting the SNS neutron source systems. These systems include proton beam windows, targets, neutron reflectors, neutron cryogenic and water moderators, neutron beam windows, instrument shutters, and other related components. The mechanical design engineer’s primary roles are to support these systems and members of the group by developing unique equipment designs to solve problems and increase capabilities of these systems.  This position requires a combination of interpersonal, organizational, and technical skills.


Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Identify critical gaps in existing target and monolith system designs and manufacturing. Works with stakeholders to develop and execute the needed changes. Develop the needed changes from concept to completed equipment through personal technical skill and by building and coordinating teams.
  • Develop unique solutions to solve manufacturing issues on SNS components by adapting existing tools and processes or developing new tools and processes.  Work closely with other engineers to incorporate these solutions into designs and execute during manufacture.
  • Deliver complex and unique mechanical designs that translate into working, reliable hardware. Work is guided by group goals, policies, and strategies. Advises management in the development of these guides.
  • Work collaboratively to perform complex technical work affecting multiple stakeholders.
  • Develop relationships with collaborators and stakeholders across the Laboratory and beyond.
  • Work to implement state of the art methods and approaches in the organization and shares expertise and new developments through mentoring and training.
  • Deliver high-quality design documentation, presentations, and reports associated with new equipment and approaches.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics
  • Comply with ORNL environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience in mechanical design
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical design and engineering concepts
  • Demonstrated knowledge in manufacturing methods and processes
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience using CAD and CAE tools
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a highly collaborative, dynamic, and diverse team
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Must be able to document work in high quality written reports and articles


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degrees in mechanical engineering or a related field, which can reduce the number of required years of experience
  • Experience in mechatronic or joint electric/mechanical design
  • Experience with Creo and Windchill
  • Familiarity with the ASME boiler and pressure vessel and piping codes
  • Professional Engineer licensing, of the ability to obtain such a license
  • Knowledge of design and manufacturing in nuclear or accelerator applications
