We are seeking a Mechanical Designer who will focus on developing and improving designs of technical systems associated with the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), including subsystems, instrumentation, power, components and assemblies. Creates computer-aided design (CAD) models and detailed design packages suitable for fabrication.  Integrates CAD models and investigates and resolves issues.  Collaborates with engineers and analysts to provide information and geometry of systems in needed forms. Interested and able to learn new software and processes to continually improve efficiency of the design cycle.  This position reports to the Design Services Group Leader in the NTD, NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborates with a diverse team to bring complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and use.
  • Creates engineering drawings and digital product definition data using computer-aided design (historically Creo).
  • Identifies and resolves model, design, and interface problems together with system lead engineers.
  • Provides insights for designing for quality fabrication.
  • Converts multi-CAD system subassemblies (Creo, AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, etc.)
  • Produces multi-component installation drawings and specifications.
  • Prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.
  • Meets milestones set by SNS/IE management, e.g. budget and schedule.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in an engineering or related discipline
  • 2 or more years of experience in design of complex mechanical, instrumentation or power systems
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered instead of an AS degree
  • Experience using 3D CAD modeling package required.
  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting plus basic engineering principles, codes, and standards required


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with machine shop interaction and machinability.
  • Enthusiasm for working in a motivated team environment.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
