The Mechanical Engineering group in Research Accelerator Division (RAD) is seeking a Mechanical Designer to produce high quality engineering design packages. In this role you will work with engineers to produce 3D models, drawing and fabrication packages of custom equipment that will be used in the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) accelerator. You will be reviewing and checking the work of detail draftsmen.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Creates engineering drawings using computer-aided design (CAD) graphics workstation.
  • Successfully communicates and collaborates with engineers and scientists throughout the design process.
  • Produces multi-system installation drawings and specifications.
  • Prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions. 
  • Checks detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards.
  • Follows the engineering Process in place at SNS and participates in improving it.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in an engineering discipline
  • 5 or more years of experience in design of complex mechanical systems
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD software, including modeling and drafting (eg Pro/E, CREO, and/or SolidWorks)
  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards
  • Experience working with large assemblies
  • Knowledge of machine shop practices and techniques for fabricating sophisticated and intricate hardware
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance
  • Understanding of the engineering change control process; ability to collaborate with others to solve problems



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with Creo (Pro/E) and Windchill is highly desired
