Overview: 

 

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to fabricate precision pixel arrays of organic scintillators for fast neutron imaging detectors and develop fixturing for field radiography.  In this role, you will design mechanical fixturing for large detector arrays in support of basic science experiments. This position resides in the Advanced Radiation Detection, imaging, Data Science, and Applications group in the Nuclear Science & Advanced Technology section of the Physics Division in the Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

ARDIDSA focuses on the development and evaluation of novel and advanced radiation detector and non-destructive evaluation concepts for basic science, nonproliferation, national security, and intelligence organizations. Our group performs the research and technology development to evolve these advanced concepts from conception to demonstration or deployment with particular emphasis on sensitivity and specificity in actual field operations, including use of radiation transport codes to model these systems and analysis codes to isolate signals of interest.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop a process and tooling to fabricate precision pixel arrays of organic scintillator for fast neutron imaging detectors
  • Development of physics based algorithms for advanced radiation detection systems
  • Support deployment of large detector arrays for basic science experiments

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and 5+ years of relevant experience or an M.S. degree and 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in standard engineering design tools (SolidWorks, Product Data Management, Excel)
  • Hands-on familiarity with machining processes and the associated equipment

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in process fixturing and development for construction of precision arrays of organic scintillator for neutron imaging
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in the design, fabrication, and testing of gamma-ray or neutron imaging gantries or fixtures
  • Experience complying with engineering documentation standards, design control, change control, and configuration management
  • Excellent human relation and oral and written communication skills,
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work as part of a team with a broad range of domestic or international collaborators, and
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory

Special Requirements

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.  
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
