Purpose

 

The Advanced Engineering Technologies (AET) Group within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) seeks applications for an Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls Engineer to support of multiple projects. The NND is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate at ORNL. A key mission of the NND is delivery of R&D needed to improve the protection of nuclear materials and fuel cycle technology and prevent the theft, diversion, and illicit use of those materials or technologies, while at the same time allowing for their peaceful use in the global arena. The division is responsible for a range of expertise, facilities, and equipment and applies these combined assets to address challenges related to nonproliferation, safeguards, treaty verification, counterproliferation, and global nuclear security. NND staff contributes world class research, technology development, risk assessment, and systems analysis related to nonproliferation and counterproliferation. The division activities play a vital role in implementation of national policy issues that strive to ensure global nuclear security.  

 

One of the major focus areas of the AET group is the development of advanced approaches to operation, characterization, and analysis of fuel cycle processes.  The group specializes in the application of chemical and engineering principles supporting the characterization of processes and related materials. The AET group collaborates and works with staff from other groups within NND and ORNL to assure the full expertise of fuel cycle processes are applied to meet sponsor needs.  

 

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

 

The successful candidate, in collaboration with principal investigators and project management at ORNL, will participate in the design, fabrication, assembly, and operation of experimental test stands. This individual will oversee maintaining the instrumentation and controls systems of existing test hardware as well as participate in the design/fabricate/build aspects of new systems. In addition to these responsibilities, the candidate will be a major contributor to R&D projects that involve electro-mechanical systems and integrated data acquisition systems.

 

In this position the candidate will be expected to effectively interact with various ORNL staff as well as internal and external sponsors.  The candidate is expected to work in a team environment with co-workers and management as well as independently; to fully document work performed in the forms of technical reports, papers and presentations; and to participate in the development of research proposals.  Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation and writing skills are required.  The successful candidate will interface with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers, and test campaign personnel.

 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or equivalent, is required with demonstrated experience in the design, fabrication, and operation of test stands and/or complex mechanical systems with integrated I&C capabilities
  • Experience generating electrical engineering design packages to include one-line diagrams, rack/panel layouts, power design calculations, controls system diagrams, controls system specifications, and instrumentation data sheet generation
  • Experience in building new test stand or process via an in-house design/build and acceptance testing process or via design/build procurement pathways
  • Experience in generating new PLC code and maintain existing PLC code assets
  • Experience in managing I&C networks and data acquisition systems
  • Panel/rack design and fabrication experience
  • Proven communication skills
  • Experience in an R&D and/or testing environment
  • The ability to work flexible hours and travel is required

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SOLIDWORKS Electrical experience
  • LabVIEW development, debugging, and operations experience
  • Siemans and Allen Bradley PLC code experience
  • Power system design and maintenance experience
  • Experience in the calibration and maintenance of instrumentation
  • Experience in maintaining high levels of process documentation and quality assurance
  • An electrical engineer with a higher level degree (MS or PhD) will be considered for this posting with experience in an applied engineering environment
  • TS/SCI Clearance

 

 

Special Requirement:

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may also be subject to random polygraph testing.

 

This position is a full-time staff position.
