Overview: 

The Plasma Enrichment Deployment and Engineering  (PEDE) Group within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) seeks applications for a Mechanical Design Lead to provide design guidance to the technicians in the PEDE group. The Enrichment Science and Engineering Division serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies, and exploring enriched stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists and engineers with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments. This position reports to the Plasma Enrichment Deployment and Engineering Group Leader.
 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring all ESED machines and build projects that are supported by PEDE have appropriate design technician coverage to support mission and operational needs.  The Mechanical Design Technical Lead works closely with the Plasma Enrichment Deployment and Engineering Group Leader, other WBS Managers and Control Account Managers (CAMs), Section Heads and Group Leaders to execute the scope of work defined in the project management plans (PMP).  Additional interfaces will be with principal investigators, management, engineers, technicians, and other individual stakeholder personnel. This position’s responsibility will include:

  • Provide technical leadership in a team environment. The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively with coworkers and management, as well as independently, to fully document work performed in the forms of technical reports, 3D models, drawings, or various project documents. The position involves interfacing with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers, and test campaign personnel. 
  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to facilitate the design, procurement, fabrication, construction, and installation of Electromagnetic Isotope Separation (EMIS) systems supporting multiple enrichment technology programs.
  • Understand and contribute to detailed formal mechanical designs, testing/analysis plans, fabrication and installation plans in coordination with stakeholder personnel.
  • Ability to solve complex mechanical challenges and/or complex system troubleshooting from aquired knowledge and significant experience
  • Ensures adherence to approved procedures and schedules
  • Fosters a collaborative work environment
  • Identifies staffing needs and coordinates with Project and Line Management to develop staffing plans
  • Supports Plasma Enrichment Deployment and Engineering Group by actively participating in machine/subassembly/subcomponent fabrication
  • Act to ensure safe and effective operations.
  • Support the Group Leader in technical leadership in the Testbed Science and Engineering Group.
  • Support the Group Leader by helping to certify the technical quality of the group’s products and services.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • This position requires a B.S. in a technical field or an equivalent combination of education and applicable experience, with at least 5 years of relevant technical experience.
  • Qualified candidates will have demonstrated experience leading diverse technical teams to accomplish project goals
  • The successful candidate must also have the ability to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to provide input and influence project direction through interaction with project team leadership.
  • The ability to work flexible hours and travel when required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with proven ability to clearly communicate, both verbally and in writing, to sponsoring agencies, engineers, researchers, technicians, and craftsmen
  • Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • A thorough understanding of manufacturing processes & supply chain management
  • Ability to hold and maintain a DOE Q security clearance is required
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q security clearance
  • Experience within the isotope enrichment industry
  • Hands on Electromagnetic Isotope Separation fabrication experience including but not limited to: Electro-mechanical, precision manufacturing/inspection, composites, and vacuum technology
  • Extensive experience in SolidWorks CAD software, GD&T, and complex design ensuring safety, manufacturability, and ease of assembly.
  • Advanced knowledge of ASME Y14.5 drawing standards and ability to lead and guide others on these standards
