Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a candidate for a Multiscale Nuclear Fuel and Materials Microscopist.  This position resides in the Nuclear Fuel Performance Group in the Nuclear Fuel Development Section , Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, Fusion and Fission Energy System Directorate at ORNL.  The candidate should have a documented record of applying novel microscopy and novel data analysis techniques to the unique microstructures that evolve in nuclear fuel under irradiation over several spatial orders of magnitude.  The candidate should have a demonstrated track record of working with a local team to accomplish programmatic goals.  The candidate should be familiar with several user facilities that host unique tools for microstructure analysis.  In additions the candidate should have demonstrated proficiency with extending the usefulness of standard material science tools such as optical microscopes through the use of computer enhanced data analysis. 

Other desired experience / skill areas include:

  • Experience producing qualified data for nuclear fuel qualification
  • Experience writing funded proposals
  • A working understanding of neutronic effects in nuclear fuel and how microstructure can change neutronics

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform experimental work in hot-cells and radiological materials laboratories centered on fuel performance characterization of fresh and irradiated nuclear fuel which may include various nuclear fuel compositions including metals, ceramics, and composites
  • Utilize expertise in nuclear fuel characterization to design, execute, and analyze new approaches to postirradiation examination
  • Work with a diverse team of experts in modeling, property measurement, irradiation design, post irradiation examination, and other relevant areas to advance science-based understanding of nuclear fuels and actinide materials
  • Produce high impact publications and conference presentations in the field of nuclear fuel materials
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Perform work according to specific rules and requirements for quality assurance, nuclear material control, radiological work, and general laboratory safety
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in nuclear engineering, materials science, or a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Strong background in nuclear materials science with a focus on nuclear fuel materials and performance as evidenced by prior work and publications

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience performing research with staff in US Department of Energy Nuclear Facility or equivalent foreign institution
  • Experience mentoring junior staff, post-docs, or interns.
  • Experience writing research proposals and managing project funds for your self and a small team.
  • Superior written and oral communications skills
  • Capability to successfully function both independently as well as in small and moderate size teams
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license
