The Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks to hire an NDE Technologist for the Integrated Operations Support Division’s Non-Destructive Examination Program in the Facilities & Operations Directorate.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

1. Perform technical duties under general supervision which include enforcement of codes for inspection of components that ensure operational suitability and safety.  Inspection Methods and Techniques include:

 

a. Radiographic Testing (RT) of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys to verify the internal structure and integrity of the specimen.  Techniques include: 

  1. Computed Radiography
  2. Digital Radiography
  3. Digital Image Archiving for Nuclear Applications
  4. Computed Tomography

 

b. Leak Testing (LT) for the location of leaks or measurement of leak rates.  Techniques include: 

  1. Bubble Testing
  2. Pressure Change Measurement Test
  3. Mass Spectrometry (magnetic sector and RGA)
  4. Ultrasonic
  5. Conductance Meter

 

c. Liquid Penetrant (PT) examination for the detection of surface discontinuities in non-porous metallic and non-metallic materials.  Techniques include: 

  1. Visible and Florescent
  2. Post-Emulsifiable,
  3. Water-Washable
  4. Solvent-Removeable

 

d. Magnetic Particle (MT) examination of ferromagnetic materials such as welds, semi-finished materials, and in-service parts to include lifting hooks.  Techniques include:

  1. Dry Powder
  2. Yoke / Coil

 

e. Pressure Test (PRT)

  1. Hydrostatic
  2. Pneumatic

 

f. Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to detect internal flaws or to characterize materials.  Perform thickness measurements using ultrasonic equipment.  Techniques include:

  1. Thickness Measurement
  2. Weld and Base Metal Inspections
  3. Shear and Longitudinal beam
  4. Phased Array (TFM/FMC)
  5. Time of Flight Diffraction

 

g. Visual Examination (VT)

  1. Direct
  2. Remote
          1.  

 

  1. Complete training and maintain certification in required nondestructive examination methods.
  2. Independently perform non-destructive examinations in accordance with company NDE procedures.
  3. Record data and report examination results.
  4. Work with Level III personnel for technique development and inspection of unique and/or complex components.
  5. Work with equipment owners to answer basic code questions and to verify the adequacy of correction of violations.
  6. Periodically assist in development, review, and revision of job hazard evaluations, internal operating procedures, and inspection checklists to ensure adequate flow down of requirements.
  7. Routinely read and interpret adopted codes, technical manuals, drawings, instructions, and specifications as related to the equipment to be inspected.
  8. Study technical literature and attends meetings to keep current on applicable codes and code changes as they occur.
  9. Work with bargaining unit employees, as needed, on fabrication and other projects.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years related NDE field experience
  • ASNT NDT Level II in at least 3 of following methods is required: Radiographic Testing, Ultrasonic Testing, Leak Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Penetrant Testing.
  • Work will involve various physical requirements and working conditions including work in and around radiological areas. A post-offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
  • Vision must be correctable to 20/22 or better (Jaeger and Snellen charts) and must be able to distinguish colors (Ishihara Test)

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in UT, LT, and RT (CR/DR) is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of ASNT; ASME B-31, API, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, hydrostatic and pneumatic testing is preferred.
  • Basic, algebraic, and trigonometric math skills
  • Capacity to use complex computer software including Volume Graphics
