Overview: 

We are seeking a Nanomaterials for Tribology Researcher who will focus on nanomaterials processing and characterization for tribological research.  This position resides in the Materials Processing Group in the Materials Structure and Processing Section, Materials Science and Tecnology Division (MSTD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our research team, you will work with ORNL’s world-class experts and have access to the state-of-the-art facilities to make major contributions to DOE projects on development of carbon nanotubes for addressing tribological issues in concentrating solar power and automotive drivetrain applications. You will be expected to (i) lead the experimental efforts in growing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and surface functionalization of CNTs using organics; (ii) conducting bench tribological testing, friction and wear measurement, and data analysis; and (iii) investigating the tribochemical interactions at the contact interface via surface/tribofilm examination and lubricant chemical analysis. Given that tribology truly is an interdisciplinary area, you are expected to be open-minded in applying combined chemical, material, and mechanical technologies and collaborating with researchers from other groups, divisions, and industrial partners. In addition to meeting project milestones and producing high impact publications, getting involved in professional societies and contributing to local communities are also highly encouraged.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead nanomaterials processing and characterization, specifically growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and surface functionalization of CNTs using organics.
  • Conduct bench tribological testing, friction and wear measurement, and data analysis.
  • Investigate tribochemical interactions between the lubricant and contact surfaces to reveal the mechanisms via surface/tribofilm examination and lubricant chemical analysis.
  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Actively engaged in developing ideas and preparing proposals to DOE and other funding agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience (after Ph.D. degree) in nanomaterials processing, tribology, and/or materials characterization

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in sysnthesis, processing, and characterization of nanomaterials, particularly CNTs.
  • Experience in CVD and other coating processes
  • Experience in tribology and lubrication
  • Familiarity with materials and surface characterization tools
  • Experience in proposal writing is a plus.
  • Strong interest and aptitude for experimental, hands-on laboratory work with motivated and safety conscious
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Ability to access to technology that is subject to export control requirements without an export control license.
