The Environment, Health, Safety & Quality (ESH&Q) directorate of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee seeks to hire a Natural Resources Manager to manage natural resources activities undertaken on the Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR). The candidate will provide oversight for the management of tasks undertaken on the ORR for DOE, including management, coordination and communication with DOE and major ORR on-site contractors; land use planning; coordination of access to and surveillance of the ORR; wildlife management and integrated ecosystems management; and wildland fire response and forest stewardship.  The Program is supported by individual subject matter experts assigned to the major tasks. The successful candidate for this position will provide overall management of the program, and supervision of the individual subject matter experts.  The ideal candidate will have a good general knowledge of a majority of the main subject areas, display good communication skills, and have experience with the management of large natural resources projects and/or large natural resources areas (parks, wildlife management areas, preserves, forest lands, etc.).


The major ORNL Natural Resources Management Program objectives are to:

  • Provide high quality, efficient, and pro-active stewardship of the Oak Ridge Reservation’s natural resources for DOE. 
  • Provide natural resources expertise to DOE, as they need, for complying with federal, state, and other requirements.
  • Manage the DOE Environmental Research Park as a national, outdoor laboratory resource for science and education.
  • Serve as a model for exemplary natural resources management among DOE sites.


Specific task responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Oversee overall natural resources management on the ORR for DOE.
  • Act as the main point of contact for interfacing with DOE and major ORR on-site contractors for services needed.
  • Act as the main point of contact for ORR uses and management.
  • Prepare, justify, and track the ORNL Natural Resources Management Program budget.
  • Respond to requests for information and data from DOE, DOE contractors, the public, and others.
  • Oversee public interface activities, including nature walks, presentations, article preparation, and other forms of communication.
  • Manage the Oak Ridge Environmental Research Park and Biosphere Reserve, Research Park user coordination, and logistics.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for NEPA-related natural resources reviews and other environmental reviews, for both DOE and major ORR on-site contractor requests.
  • Implement management per DOE approved orders, documents and resources.
  • Integrate various land uses and maintain an ORR ecosystem level vision.
  • Incorporate sustainable approaches to management and stewardship.
  • Leverage resources through partnerships, students and volunteers.
  • Network with other Federal and State agency resource experts to maintain current knowledge.
  • Ensure all projects initiated by the ORNL Natural Resources Management Program team are carefully reviewed for safe approaches.


Basic (Required) Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, ecology, plant ecology, wildlife management, forest management, environmental science, or a related discipline is required. 
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in the field
  • Work will involve various physical requirements and as such a post-offer, pre-hire physical will be required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in natural resources, ecology, plant ecology, wildlife management, forest management, environmental science, or a related discipline is preferred. 
  • The candidate should show evidence of natural resources management experience via past positions.
  • Professional collaborations and work coordination with other agencies and organizations can be expected on a frequent basis.
  • The candidate should have the ability to work in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues in a fast-paced environment.
