The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is responsible for providing information technology services that enable ORNL staff to be productively engaged in the business of world-class research and development. ITSD is responsible for a broad range of IT services including business systems operations, network and telecommunications, R&D systems engineering, customer service, applications development, cyber security, project management, planning and architecture.  


We are seeking a task lead for our Network Operations team. Strong leadership, excellent communication, and deep technical skills are needed for this position. The Network Operations team is responsible for managing a broad portfolio of network-related activities, systems and services. 


Major Duties/Responsibilities 

• Lead a staff of highly technical personnel to deliver network and unified communication services 
• Manage daily activities required to deploy and support network and unified communications systems with a very high availability percentage 
• Develop networking strategic plans to support future needs and keep the networking infrastructure technically responsive to the needs of the Lab 
• Analyze departmental needs and establish priorities for feasibility studies, systems design and implementation to develop new and/or modify the company's networking systems 
• Manage vendor relationships in support of new and ongoing work 
• Develop and manage detailed work plans, project estimates, status reports, project tracking and analysis, and set  work schedules to achieve organizational goals. 
• Develop, implement and manage performance analysis and capacity planning for network circuits/devices 
• Identify areas for automation of processes and other potential process improvements 
• Applies continuous improvement techniques to ensure the network and security infrastructure attains maximum performance, security and availability. 
• Direct, manage and plan network and systems activities to ensure achievement of company-wide technical needs and objectives  



Basic Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a business or computing-relevant discipline.  

• Solid understanding of industry-standard network design principles and best practices Ability to comprehend, analyze and research problems of a complex nature, make judgment decisions and recommendations as to their solution 

• Proven experience designing and maintaining enterprise-class, highly-available LANs, WANs, unified communications, and mobility services 

• Knowledge and expertise of network performance monitoring and investigative tools 
• Knowledge and expertise of IPsec and client virtual private networks, VLANs, certificate authorities, one-time password technologies, 802.1x, Security Event Monitoring and other auditing, authentication and authorization mechanisms and systems 
• Must ensure that the network environment remains secure and appropriate recovery and redundancy issues are addressed • Ability to solve practical problems while maintaining strict compliance with existing policies, procedures and established standards 
• Experience training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical concepts and procedures 
• Must be able to provide excellent customer service to internal and/or external customers 
• Process-oriented approach with a penchant for creating and maintaining quality documentation 
• Leadership skills with the ability to manage and assess technical projects through completion. 
• Ability to handle multiple priorities and tight deadlines 
• A successful track record of designing, implementing, and maintaining complex networks 
• Must have a working knowledge and expertise in local and wide area networking and communications including; all forms of networking media and L2 switching, DNS, DHCP, IP multicast, BGP, EIGRP, OSPF, MPLS, VoIP, QoS, etc. 
• Strong written and oral communication skills 
• Proven analytical and problem-solving skills 
• This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy 


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Advanced Degree in information technology or related field  

  • At least 3 years of experience leading enterprise level networking teams 

  • Familiarity with supporting and enabling Research and Development (R&D) institutions 

  • Experience with federal IT compliance requirements.
