Overview:
We are seeking a Research and Development Associate Staff Member who will support our Neutrino Research Group in the Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will play an active role in the R&D of instrumentation for the Neutrino Research Group experiments to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge-76 and study the fundamental properties of the neutrino in scattering experiments at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). While this is a position within the Physics Division, physics instrumentation is a multidisciplinary science which requires a broader knowledge set and we’re looking for a researcher with working knowledge of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and/or material science. The position also requires management of the Division’s chemistry laboratory.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Coordinate operations of the Physics Division’s Scintillator Laboratory

Contribute to R&D on advanced instrumentation and the design of the next generation LEGEND-1000 experiment.

Basic Qualifications:
-
A Doctoral degree in nuclear physics, particle physics, or a related field.

Experience in experimental nuclear and particle physics.

Background in radiation detection and/or physics instrumentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Working knowledge of day-to-day operations and safety of a chemistry laboratory.

Working knowledge of organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and/or material science.

Proven experience with low-background detectors, cryogenic liquid scintillators, and/or Ge detector technology.

Experience working in underground laboratories and cleanrooms.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time, and adapt to evolving needs.
