Overview:
We are seeking a Nuclear Criticality Safety Analyst who will provide criticality safety support for the reactor and nonreactor nuclear facilities at the Laboratory. This position resides in the Nuclear and Criticality Safety Services Group in the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division, Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide technical safety support for laboratory divisions and nuclear facilities in accordance with internal procedures and standards.
- Provides technical safety-related support for the operation of hazard category 1 and 2 nuclear facilities, experiments, processes, and activities.
- Perform, document, and maintain nuclear criticality safety evaluations required for new and existing operations and research with fissionable material in ORNL hazard category 1 and 2 nuclear facilities and activities.
- Develop and maintain nuclear criticality procedures and controlled records.
- Be proficient in the verification, validation, and use of the SCALE code package for modeling and evaluating fissionable material configurations.
- Conduct and participate in audits/assessments of fissionable material operations, including periodic unannounced compliance checks of fissionable material operations.
- Understand and be proficient in DOE requirements and guidance pertinent to Nuclear Criticality Safety, including but not limited to:
- DOE O 420.1C Attachment 2, Chapter III, Nuclear Criticality Safety.
- DOE-STD-3007-2017, Guidelines for Preparing Criticality Safety Evaluations at Department of Energy Non-Reactor Nuclear Facilities.
- The ANS-8 series of American National Standards Institute standards
- Develop and provide technical training for ORNL staff in nuclear criticality safety.
- It is also desirable that an individual develop and maintain a national and at times, international reputation in nuclear criticality safety by preparing and presenting papers relevant to nuclear criticality safety and by membership on ANSI/ANS standards working groups.

Basic Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Engineering degree in Nuclear Engineering or a Bachelor of Science degree in a related scientific discipline
- A minimum of 5 years of related experience at a nuclear facility
- Knowledge of nuclear criticality safety evaluation techniques and demonstrated familiarity with DOE or NRC requirements is required
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills; knowledgeable of standard workoplace personal computer applications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience using Linux/Unit is preferred.
- Previous experience in nuclear facility operations, design, and/or technical support is highly desired.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
