The Nuclear Data (ND) Group within the Nuclear Data, Criticality Safety, and Radiation Transport Section of the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks applicants for a R&D distinguished scientist position, with an emphasis in the area of nuclear data research to support nuclear technology applications. The primary function of this open position is to develop and code novel nuclear data analyses methods to be implemented in ORNL nuclear data evaluation and processing software code packages such as SAMMY and SCALE/AMPX.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The Nuclear Data Analyst staff member will perform methods development in cross section evaluation, processing and testing, and radiation transport analyses to support nuclear technology applications. The successful candidate will be involved in performing research and development in (1), advanced cross section evaluation and processing methods, (2) analysis and evaluation of neutron cross section data, (3) development of new and/or enhancement of existing computational capabilities to support the modernization of the AMPX, SAMMY, and SCALE code packages, (4) generation and testing of nuclear data sets using cross section processing systems(i.e., AMPX and NJOY) and radiation transport packages (i.e., SCALE and MCNP), (5) development of covariance data and (6) mentor students.


The selected candidate will be responsible for interacting with division staff members inside and outside the ND Group, working on projects in a team environment, working independently, and leading R&D activities. The successful candidate is expected to be able to interface effectively with project sponsors, participate in the development of research proposals, and publish results of their work.


Basic Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in physics or nuclear engineering PhD and 12 minimum of years experience.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments nuclear data evaluation and/or analytical methods development for nuclear data applications.
  • Programming and coding experience of numerical methods using modern programming languages is wanted.
  • A firm understanding of the physics and methods of cross section processing and nuclear data analysis is needed.
  • Required are experience in radiation transport analysis with current analysis codes, such as AMPX, NJOY, SAMMY, SCALE and MCNP.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in changing the nuclear data processing code AMPX is highly desired.
  • Experience in nuclear data theory development, experimental data evaluation and covariance development for materials as a function of temperature is highly desirable.
  • Experience in nuclear data analysis in the resolved and unresolaved neutron resaonance range is desired.
  • Experience in thermal neutron scattering data (TSL) analysis and methods
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of problems, and the ability to determine and understand the broader context of his or her research are also requirements for this position.
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, presentation, and writing skills, are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors. Candidates must also have a successful publication record.
  • Excellent skills in writing proposals to answer calls from sponsors.
  • Experience in mentoring students and young staff member is desired.
