Overview:
We are seeking an Nuclear Energy Controls Engineer who will focus on developing and applying modern control technologies for nuclear energy applications. This position resides in the Modern Nuclear I&C group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division, FFES Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of our research team, you will perform R&D to advance the field of knowledge and technology in machine learning and data science applied to advancing nuclear energy; perform work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and support a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated—a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and demonstrate modern control approaches to nuclear energy systems to meet emerging operational contexts
- Apply and integrate data science techniques and digital twins with control architectures to support reasonable level of autonomy in the operation of nuclear energy systems under emerging contexts
- Work with R&D line management and other research staff to Identify opportunities for research program development, and lead proposals
- Be an active member of professional organizations and contribute to the advancement of the advanced controls professional communities, and
- Lead the development of journal and conference articles and technical reports that document research results.
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in mechanical, electrical, nuclear, computer, or chemical engineering, engineering physics, or a related field
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in advanced control systems
- Strong scholarly record demonstrated by a record of publications and presentations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with nuclear energy control needs and applications
- Experience with machine learning techniques and tools such as Tensorflow and Pytorch
- Experience with modeling and simulation software such as Modelica, ANSYS
- Experience with common software tools for modeling in nuclear energy (e.g., CTF, VERA, SCALE, MOOSE, etc.)
- Experience in proposal writing
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
