We are seeking a staff Nuclear Energy Data Engineer who will focus on developing and applying data science and machine learning technologies for nuclear energy applications.  This position resides in the Modern Nuclear Instrumentation and Control (MNIC) group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). As part of our research team, you will work to advance the field of knowledge in machine learning and data science, develop and qualify new related technologies, and apply them to advance nuclear energy.  Our team members have the opportunity to work collaboratively with diverse subject matter experts from across the laboratory to solve challenging and important problems related to development, construction and operation of nuclear energy technologies, other carbon-free energy technologies, and ORNL scientific facilities. Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop, implement and apply physics-informed data science techniques, with nuclear plant operational data, to support the development of digital twins with applications in design, operational monitoring, anomaly detection and fault isolation, and system control
  • Collaborate on advancement of model based system engineering capabilities; collaborate on the advancement of new sensors and instrumentation strategies
  • Perform uncertainty quantification and uncertainty propagation analyses
  • Work with R&D line management and other research staff to Identify opportunities for research program development, and contribute to proposals
  • Be an active member of professional organizations and contribute to the advancement of the nuclear energy data science professional communities, and
  • Lead the development of journal and conference articles and technical reports that document research results.


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in mechanical, electrical, or nuclear engineering, engineering physics, or a related field


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of data analytics methods, artificial intelligence, and numerical methods for iterative solution of engineering models
  • Knowledge of Python, Julia, C++, Fortran and/or other relevant languages.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques and tools such as Tensorflow and Pytorch
  • Experience with modeling and simulation software such as Modelica, ANSYS
  • Experience with common software tools for modeling in nuclear energy (e.g., CTF, VERA, SCALE, MOOSE, etc.)
