Overview:
We are seeking a Nuclear Facility Safety Engineer who will provide nuclear safety support for the nonreactor nuclear facilities at the Laboratory. This position resides in the Nonreactor Nuclear Safety Group in the Nuclear Facility Safety Division, Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide technical safety-related support for the operation of Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities/activities and below Hazard Category 3 (radiological) facilities/activities.
- Perform, document, and maintain technical safety analyses for new and/or existing Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities/activities and below Hazard Category 3 (radiological) facilities/activities, including hazard identification, hazard categorization, hazard analysis, accident analysis, and establishment of hazard controls and their functional requirements.
- Coordinate with facility operations personnel and regulators to achieve and maintain approval of compliant safety basis documentation.
- Understand DOE requirements and guidance in order to assist in the development and implementation of safety basis analysis of policies, practices, and procedures.
- Ensure technical compliance with 10 CFR 830 Subparts A and B affecting facility safety through implementation of ORNL Standards Based Management Systems and internal procedures.
- Evaluate modifications, experiments, operations, and safety basis documentation in coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs.
- Provide technical training for ORNL staff in nuclear safety basis development, implementation, and maintenance.
- Validate, maintain, and operate computer codes to support nuclear facility safety analysis activities.

Basic Qualifications:
- A BS degree in an engineering, science, health and safety, or related technical discipline.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant nuclear experience in a nuclear facility.
- A minimum of 2 years of nuclear experience at a DOE nuclear facility.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated familiarity with DOE safety analysis requirements, including DOE-STD-1027 and DOE-STD-3009.
- Knowledge of hazard categorization and facility safety analysis techniques.
- Technical writing and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
- Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
- Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
