The Environment, Safety, and Health Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the Nuclear Facility and Accelerator Safety Analyst position within the Nuclear and Criticality Safety Services Group of the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division.  ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.  ORNL operates five non-reactor nuclear facilities and dozens of radiological facilities that perform nuclear research and isotope production activities to support the advancement of nuclear power applications and medical isotope availability.  In addition, ORNL operates the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), a one-of-a-kind research facility that provides the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development.


The Nuclear and Criticality Safety Services Group within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division seeks experienced applicants for a staff position to support its non-reactor nuclear and accelerator facilities.


Specific Job Knowledge & Training Required:


  • Provides hazard categorization and inventory management support to researchers and facility management organizations associated with below hazard category 3 (radiological) facilities.
  • Provides technical safety support for laboratory divisions, nuclear facilities, and accelerator facilities in accordance with internal procedures and standards. 
  • Provides technical safety-related support for the operation of hazard category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities, accelerator facilities, and nuclear experiments, processes, and activities. 
  • Performs, documents, and maintains technical safety analyses for new and existing ORNL hazard category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities and activities and accelerator facilities, including
    • hazard identification,
    • hazard categorization,
    • hazard analysis,
    • accident analysis,
    • and establishment of hazard controls and their functional requirements. 
  • Coordinate with operators and regulators to achieve and maintain approval of compliant safety basis documentation. 
  • Understand DOE requirements and guidance in order to assist in the development and implementation of safety basis analysis of policies, practices, and procedures. 
  • Provide technical training for ORNL staff in nuclear safety basis development, implementation, and maintenance.  Validate, maintain, and operate computer codes to support nuclear facility and accelerator facility safety analysis activities.
  • In coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs, evaluate modifications, experiments, operations, and safety basis documentation for the Nuclear and Criticality Safety Services Section of the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division.



Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, plus a minimum of five years of relevant experience in nuclear facility safety, accelerator safety, and/or nuclear facility hazard categorization within the Department of Energy Complex.  Knowledge of hazard categorization and nuclear facility safety analysis techniques and demonstrated familiarity with DOE requirements for safety analysis is required. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in nuclear facility operations, design, or technical support is highly desired. 
  • Technical writing skills are essential, and verbal and analytical skills are highly desirable. 
  • Should be able to form reasonable, independent judgments and interpret requirements to balance needs of research, production, and safety.


This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
