The Advanced Reactor Systems (ARS) Group within the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a research and development associate staff position for thermomechanical design and analysis of nuclear fuels for reactor applications. ARS works to accelerate the design, development and deployment of advanced energy systems such as advanced nuclear reactors, neutron science facilities, energy storage and power conversion systems through the integration of modeling and simulation expertise with experimental research and physical testing. ARS fuel performance analysis capabilities support fuel design and analysis for the US Department of Energy’s Versatile Test Reactor Project, development of fuel technologies and concepts for the current fleet of light water reactors, development of fuel concepts for other reactors including research reactors, support for regulatory and licensing activities for fuel technologies, and advanced modeling and simulation capabilities including multiphysics coupling.  


Major Duties / Responsibilities:


  • Apply engineering-scale thermomechanical modeling and simulation tools to design and analyze nuclear fuels for a range of reactor types.  Fuel technologies of interest include metallic fuels for fast reactors, oxide fuels or advanced fuels for LWRs, and TRISO for gas-cooled and salt-cooled reactors.
  • Develop models and perform analysis supporting fuel concept design and qualification activities.
  • Complete verification and validation of fuel performance codes and models for specific applications.
  • Analyze past irradiation experiments and support the design of new fuel and cladding experiments.
  • Contribute to research proposal identification and development.
  • Document work performed to meet sponsor and mission needs, including preparation of peer-reviewed papers for publications in journals and conference proceedings.


Required Qualifications:


  • PhD in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science or engineering, engineering physics, chemical engineering, aeronautical engineering, engineering science, or a related field.
  • Established aptitude in the application and development of engineering models of nuclear reactor and/or fuel systems for performance analysis, safety analysis, and/or design purposes.
  • Commitment to working in a diverse, inclusive and collaborative team environment.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Knowledge of thermomechanical analysis of nuclear fuels, as demonstrated through research and associated publications
  • Familiarity with a range of nuclear reactor and nuclear fuel technologies and concepts
  • Working knowledge of one or more complementary technical areas such as neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, or clad-coolant chemistry
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with nuclear fuel performance or structural analysis software (e.g., BISON, FRAPCON/FAST, TRANSURANUS, FALCON, PARFUME, or ANSYS)
  • Experience working in Linux environments on large computing cluster architectures
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, presentation, and written) that enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsors
