Purpose

The Radioisotope Science and Technology Division, Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking one or more candidates for a Radiochemical Processing Technician position in the Bethel Valley Radiochemical Processing Group. 

Description

The Bethel Valley Radiochemical Processing Group (BVRP) within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an immediate opening for a radiochemical processing technician position.  We are seeking highly motivated, highly talented radiochemical processing technicians to join our growing team and to help develop new processes for production of medical radioisotopes that will be of benefit society.  

Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist technical staff and senior technicians with the day to day operations of chemical and radiochemical laboratories and assisting with glovebox and hot-cell operations and remote chemical processing 
  • Additional responsibilities include assisting with the coordination of the radioactive and hazardous waste disposal, managing the chemical inventory within the facility, and interacting with other team members to resolve processing-related problems  
  • The successful candidate will work with experienced scientists, engineers and senior technicians to establish solutions to complex problems 
  • NSITD conducts leading-edge science, technology, and engineering R&D supporting the production and application of stable and radioisotopes; nuclear nonproliferation, safeguards, threat reduction, and transportation security; and other nuclear security and defense programs. 

Qualifications Required

  • This position requires a minimum of an associate degree or equivalent in physical or engineering sciences.  Plus 2 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience   
  • The candidate should have a demonstrated ability and hands-on experience with safe handling of highly radioactive samples and experience with glove box and/or remote hot cell operations is desirable.    Self-motivation, ability to work in a team, and a demonstrated safe work ethic are essential 
  • Experience in wet-chemistry operations and nuclear detection methods including gamma-ray spectroscopy is desirable  
  • Excellent communication skills are essential to enable effective interaction with peers, technical and non-technical staff 
  • Self-motivation, ability to work in a team, and a commitment to safe work practices are essential
